Softball Picks Up Six Wins At Rebel Spring Games

The Indiana State softball team improved its record to 9-7 on the season after finishing 6-2 at the Rebel Spring Games held in Orlando, Fla. this past week. The Sycamores were slated to play 10 games, however, two games were washed out due to wet field conditions.

Game One vs. Holy Cross

The Sycamores got the tournament started off on the right foot with a 2-1 win over Holy Cross on Sunday.

The Sycamores grabbed the early lead in the third inning after sophomore Alex Lucas reached base on an error and freshman Alex Baumgart hit an RBI double to give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead. The Sycamores never looked back as they added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Baumgart singled to get things going for the Sycamores before freshman Danielle Ketner singled to advance Baumgart to third. Baumgart then stole home to give the Sycamores a 2-1 lead.

Holy Cross threatened to come back as they scored a run in the bottom of the sixth but the Sycamores didn't let up and went on to get their first win of the Rebel Games by a final score of 2-1.

Game Two vs. Detroit Mercy

After picking up their first win earlier in the day, the Sycamores dropped a 2-1 decision to the Titans of Detroit Mercy.

The Sycamores struck first as they picked up their only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs senior Stephanie Jonson singled for the Sycamores and she was scored by freshman Shelby Wilson who doubled to left field to give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead.

The Titans struck back in the top of the third inning with a pair of unearned runs and the Sycamores could not respond as they fell by a final score of 2-1.

Game Three vs. Bryant

On the second day of the Rebel Games the Sycamores returned to their winning ways picking up a 5-4 win over Bryant University.

The Sycamores got off to a hot start with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Baumgart and sophomore Kim Pierce crossed the plate for the Sycamores.

The Sycamores added another run in the bottom of the third inning when junior Olivia Andres hit a single through the left side to score Jonson and give the Sycamores a 3-0 lead.

Bryant answered the Sycamores run with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Sycamores responded and added a run in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to get the 5-4 in nine innings.

Game Four vs. Lehigh

The Sycamores grabbed their second win of the day with a 9-7 win over Lehigh University.

The Sycamores used a seven run top of the first inning to get ahead of the Mountain Hawks and never looked back. The Mountain Hawks added one run in the bottom of the first inning but the Sycamores added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a 9-1 lead.

The Mountain Hawks made a come back but fell short as the Sycamores got a 9-7 win.

Game Five vs. Sacred Heart

The Sycamores earned their third win consecutive win with a 2-1 come from behind win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday.

Sacred Heart got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 early lead over the Sycamores. In the bottom of the sixth inning with runners on second and third, junior Alyssa Marcum singled up the middle to score junior Stephanie Robinson and junior Bailey Wittenauer and gave the Sycamores a 2-1 lead. Sacred Heart could not respond, giving the Sycamores a 2-1 win.

Game Six vs. Florida A&M

After winning three straight games, the Sycamores win streak stalled and the Sycamores dropped a 7-6 contest in the international tie break rule to the Rattlers.

Game Seven vs. Lafayette

After struggling to find offense early the Sycamores took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Pierce hit an RBI double to score Robinson from second. The scored did not change until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Sycamores found their offense and scored seven runs to defeat the Lafayette College Leopards 8-0.

Game Eight vs. Columbia

In their final game of the Rebel Games the Sycamores took a 5-0 win over Columbia University.

The Sycamores took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning before adding one in the top of the fifth inning.

The Sycamores will next be in action on Thursday when they host the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars at 3 p.m. at Price Field.
