TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State women's basketball team closed out the home portion of their regular season schedule on Sunday, sending Kelsie Cooley, the lone senior of the 2010-11 squad, off in style with a 64-50 victory over in-state rival Evansville in front of 3,365 fans inside Hulman Center.
With the win, ISU improves to 14-13 overall and evens their conference record at 8-8 while UE falls to 8-19 on the season, 3-13 in league play. Indiana State remains tied with Wichita State in the Valley standings, but both team's jump over Drake into a tie for fifth place thanks to WSU's 72-58 win over DU in Wichita on Sunday.
Evansville opened the scoring on Sunday, getting a layup from Meagan Collins on the game's opening possession to give the Purple Aces a 2-0 lead, but Indiana State used a 13-2 run until the 12:32 mark of the first half to regain the lead for good. ISU's first three baskets of the game came on 3-pointers, with one each from junior Brittany Schoen, junior Deja Mattox and freshman Anna Munn.
The Sycamores took a 10-point lead into the locker room, at 27-17. Munn led all scorers with eight points in the first half, while Mattox added five points and five rebounds. Cooley pulled down seven rebounds in the game's first 20 minutes, with five coming on the offensive end. As a team, ISU shot 29.0% in the first half (9-for-31), including 4-for-12 from long range (33.3%). Stephanie Bamberger led UE with five points and three boards.
Indiana State began the second half on a 9-4 run to take their largest lead of the game, at 38-21 with 16:33 to play, capping their run on an old-fashioned three-point play by Mattox.
Evansville hung around in the second half, getting the Indiana State lead to just six points, at 46-40, with 6:50 remaining on a triple by Bamberger, but the Sycamores responded by scoring on their next six possessions to total a 13-3 run that put the game out of reach for the Aces. An old-fashioned three-point play by junior Shannon Thomas ended the run for the Sycamores, with ISU in front 59-43 with 3:34 to go.
Thomas finished with game-highs in points (17) and rebounds (13) on Sunday, scoring 13 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the second half alone for her ninth double-double of the season and seventh in Valley play. Mattox joined Thomas in double figures, with 14 points, while Cooley added eight points and nine boards. Bamberger led UE with 13 points and four rebounds with Chelsea Falkenstein adding 11 point and six rebounds for the Purple Aces.
As a team, the Sycamores shot 54.5% (12-for-22) in the second half, including a 12-for-14 effort at the charity stripe. ISU won the battle of the boards, outrebounding UE by a 47-35 mark, leading to a 10-2 advantage in second-chance points.
ISU hits the road for their final two regular season games, as the Sycamores travel to regular-season MVC champion Northern Iowa (22-5, 15-1 MVC) on Thursday, Mar. 3, before ending the regular season at Bradley (13-14, 6-10 MVC) on Saturday, Mar. 5.
