The Indiana State softball team fell 9-3 to Eastern Kentucky
in their first game of the Magic City Classic hosted by the University of
Alabama Birmingham.
The Colonels got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in
the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. After holding the Sycamores scoreless, the
Colonels then extended their lead to 7-0 with four more runs in the bottom of
the second inning.
The Sycamores finally got their bats going in the top of the
third inning where they scored three runs.
Senior Stephanie Jonson led off the inning with a walk
before freshman Danielle Ketner singled to advance Jonson to second. Jonson was
then tagged out on a fielders choice, however, Ketner advanced to second to put
runners on first and second.
Freshman Shelby Wilson then reached on a throwing error by
Eastern Kentucky and then advanced to second and Ketner scored the Sycamores
first run. Later in the inning, junior Bailey Wittenauer hit a two RBI single
to score Wilson and freshman Alex Baumgart and to close the gap to 7-3.
The Sycamores could not get any closer as the Colonels went
on to score two more runs en route to a 9-3 Sycamore loss.
Wittenauer finished the game 3-4 from the plate with two RBI's
while Baumgart went 3-4 with a run scored.
The Sycamores will return to action Saturday in day two of
the Magic City Classic as they play Samford at 1:30 p.m. and Lipscomb at 9 p.m.
