DES MOINES, Iowa - Junior Brittany Schoen poured in a career-high 25 points on Saturday, including a personal best of seven 3-pointers, but a total of 30 free-throws attempts for the Drake Bulldogs carried the home team to a 72-67 victory inside the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
With the loss, the Sycamore fall into a tie with Wichita State for sixth place in the conference with a 6-8 record in league record while the Bulldogs hold steady in fifth place, at 8-6 in the MVC.
Just as they did on Thursday at Creighton, the Sycamores got off to a hot start, beginning the game on an 8-3 run over the games' opening 3:17 on a pair of 3-pointers from Schoen and a jumper from senior Kelsie Cooley.
Drake responded with a 6-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the game, at 9-8 with 15:15 remaining in the half, but Schoen knocked down another triple after an offensive rebound from sophomore Taylor Whitley to give ISU the lead again at 11-9.
Schoen's trey started an 11-2 run for the Sycamores that put them in front by their largest margin in the first half of eight points, when Cooley knocked down a 3-pointer on a kick-out from the paint by junior Shannon Thomas to put ISU up 19-11 with 10:16 until the break.
Indiana State would not trail again in the first half, taking a 29-25 lead into the locker room. Schoen paced all scorers at the break with 14 points, while Cooley added five points in the first half. Drake's Kristin Turk led the Bulldogs with six first-half points.
The Sycamores came out in the second half and looked to put some distance between themselves and the Bulldogs, going up by nine points, at 44-35 with 13:54 to play on a triple by junior Deja Mattox. After a jumper by DU's Stephanie Running, ISU went up again by nine points, at 46-37, on a pair of free-throws from Thomas with 13:19 to go.
After Turk converted an old-fashioned three-point play, Thomas knocked down another jumper to give ISU an eight-point lead with 12:21 to play, at 48-40, but that would be the final field goal for the Sycamores for more than eight minutes of play.
A 3-pointer from Turk began a 19-3 run for the Bulldogs, a run that turned ISU's eight-point lead into an eight-point deficit, at 59-51 with 4:33 on a pair of free-throws from Rachael Hackbarth. During the run for Drake, ISU went 0-for-10 from the field and were whistled for six fouls.
Indiana State would cut the Drake lead to three-points on a pair of occasions, at 65-62 with 1:13 to go on a triple by Schoen and again at 70-67 with seven seconds left, but that would be as close as the Sycamores could get on Saturday.
The Bulldogs fueled their second-half comeback at the free-throw line, making 23 trips to the line in second half, compared to Indiana State's 13 shots at the line for the game. Despite the physical nature of the game by both sides, the Sycamores were called for a total of 20 fouls compared to 10 for the Bulldogs, including just one foul against Drake in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Schoen finished the game with career-highs in points (27) and 3-pointers made (seven), going 9-for-19 form the field and 7-for-14 from beyond the arc. Thomas also finished in double figures with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds, despite fouling out of the game with over six minutes remaining. Cooley added nine points, along with eight from Mattox. Whitley finished with an all-around stat line of six points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Turk, the MVC's leading scorer, totaled a game-high 27 points, with 21 coming in the second half. Hackbarth also finished in double digits with 18 points, going 12-for-15 at the charity stripe.
The Sycamores play their final regular season home games this upcoming weekend, when they host Southern Illinois on Friday, Feb. 25, and Evansville on Sunday, Feb. 27. The weekend will include Senior Day on Sunday, when the Sycamores will honor Kelsie Cooley, the lone senior on the 2010-11 squad.
