The Indiana State softball team (1-3) finished their first
tournament of the season Sunday as they fell to Eastern Illinois and the
University of Louisiana-Monroe.
Game One
The Sycamores began the day with a tough loss to the
Panthers of Eastern Illinois University where they fell 2-0.
Freshman left fielder Alex Baumgart got things started for
the Sycamores in the top of the first inning with a single to left field and
advanced to second on a passed ball. Junior Stephanie Robinson then grounded
out to advance Baumgart to third. However, the inning came to an abrupt end
when freshman right fielder Shelby Wilson hit into a double play from shortstop
to first base to the catcher to keep the Sycamores from scoring.
The Sycamores could only get two more hits the rest of the
game, however, they held the Panthers scoreless until the bottom of the fifth
inning when the Panthers racked up two runs.
The Sycamores couldn't respond and eventually fell by the
final score of 2-0.
Sophomore pitcher Kristen Felker was on the mound for the
Sycamores and threw for four and a third innings giving up just two runs off
four hits with only one earned run with five strikeouts.
Game Two
In game two the Sycamore offense threatened but couldn't get
a runner across the plate as they fell to host UL-Monroe 9-0.
Once again the Sycamores lead off runner advanced to third
in the top of the first inning. However, the Sycamores couldn't bring in a run
and ended the inning inning with two hits.
The Warhawks got their first run of the game in the bottom
of the second inning on a Sycamore throwing error.
Neither team's offense could get anything going again until
the bottom of the fifth inning when the Sycamores gave up four runs with only
one of them being earned.
The Warkhawks then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of
the sixth inning with the Sycamores eventually falling by a final score of 9-0.
Baumgart finished the game going 1-3 with two stolen bases.
Junior pitcher Lindsey Beisser threw four and two thirds innings giving up five
runs but only one earned run.
The Sycamores return to action at Saturday when they have
their home opener against IPFW with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. at Price
Field.
