CHICAGO -
Senior Shannon Thomas became the 23rd member of the 1,000 Point Club
at Indiana State on Tuesday night, scoring a career-high 31 points and pulling
down 12 rebounds as Indiana State edged Chicago State, 67-59, inside the Emil
and Patricia Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.
The win improves the Sycamores to 6-5 on the season and is their second road
victory of the season, matching their total from one season ago. The loss drops
the Cougars to 1-12 overall. The win also makes Indiana State a perfect 17-0
under second-year head coach Teri Moren when holding an opponent under 60
points.
Thomas and Chicago State's Janay Dockery battled back-and-forth throughout the
entire game, leading their respective offenses with dominant performances. Dockery
led all scorers with 34 points, going 9-for-18 from the field and hitting all
13 of her free throws.
Indiana State held a seven-point lead with 13:30 remaining in the first half,
as senior Brittany Schoen knocked down a 3-pointer on a pass from sophomore Anna Munn. The Cougars responded with a 10-2 run over the next six minutes, taking a
20-19 lead on a layup by freshman Jackie Jones with 7:31 left in the half.
The Sycamores responded with a 13-2 run of their own, taking their largest lead
of the game at 32-22 with 3:37 left in the half on a jumper by Thomas.
ISU held a 37-31 advantage at the break, as Thomas and Schoen paced the
visitors with nine points each. Thomas also pulled down nine boards in the first
half. Dockery led the Cougars with 17 points in the opening 20 minutes of
action.
The second half was a battle between ISU's 6-foot-4 center and CSU's 5-foot-9
guard. Thomas scored 22 of Indiana State's 30 second-half points, while Dockery
tallied 17 of Chicago State's 28.
After a layup by Thomas to start the second half, Chicago State battled back
with an 8-0 run to tie the score at 39-39 with 18:12 to play on a trey by
freshman Tierra Williams.
The free-throw line kept the Cougars in the ballgame, as the home side went
over 10 minutes without a field goal in the second half. Despite not scoring
from the field, the Sycamores could not pull away as the Cougars hit 11 free
throws during the span and never let ISU get more than four-point lead. For the
game, Chicago State went 21-of-23 from the charity stripe.
The Sycamore tied the game with 4:29 remaining, when Thomas knotted the score
at 55-55 on a shot in the paint. The senior center gave ISU a lead they would
not relinquish on a free throw on ISU's next possession, as ISU ended the game
on a 14-2 run.
For the game, Schoen and fellow senior Deja Mattox each added nine points. Munn
turned in an all-around performance with seven points, five rebounds and a
team-high four assists.
As a team, ISU shot 41.2% (21-for-51) from the field and 31.6% (6-for-19) from
beyond arc. All six of ISU's treys came in the opening 20 minutes of action, as
the Sycamores went 6-for-14 in the first half and 0-for-5 in the second stanza.
The double-double was the 23rd of Thomas' career and fifth in 11
games this season. Thomas also became the fifth member in Sycamore history to
go for 1,000 points and 700 rebounds for her career.
Indiana State ends nonconference play on Thursday, Dec. 22, when the Sycamores
travel to DeKalb, Ill., to face the Northern Illinois Huskies. Tipoff is set
for 8:00 p.m. (ET), 7:00 p.m. locally.
