The Indiana State women's
basketball team looks to pick up their first road victory of the 2011-12 season
on Sunday, Nov. 27, when the team travels to Nashville, Tenn., to take on the
Belmont Bruins. ISU and BU are set to tip inside the Curb Event Center at 3:00
p.m. (ET).
Sunday's game can be heard
live on ESPN Radio 92.7 FM and AM 1300, with Brent Holl calling all the action
on the Nelligan Sports Marketing Radio Network.
Indiana State got back to
the .500 mark on Tuesday, earning a 65-40 victory over in-state for IUPUI
inside Hulman Center. Senior Deja Mattox led the Sycamores to the victory,
tying careers highs in both points and rebounds with a 22-point, nine-rebound
effort. Fellow senior Brittany Schoen joined Mattox in double figures, adding
10 points.
ISU played strong defense
against the Jaguars last Tuesday, holding IUPUI to a 26.7-percent field goal
percentage from the field (16-for-60) and just 20-percent (3-for-15) from long
range. Indiana State also won the rebounding battle for the first time this
season, pulling down 51 rebounds to IUPUI's 37. ISU turned 16 offensive
rebounds into 13 second-chance points.
Scouting The Bruins
Belmont enters Sunday's
matchup at 0-5 on the season, playing four of their five games away from home.
The Bruins last took the court on Wednesday, falling 65-51 on the road at Ohio.
Senior center Haley Nelson leads BU this season, averaging 14.6 points and 8.4
rebounds per game this season. No other member of the Bruins roster averages
more than six points or four rebounds per game other than Nelson, who went for
13.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game as a junior. Belmont was tabbed fourth in
the preseason vote of coaches in the Atlantic Sun Conference, after going 11-20
overall and 7-13 in league play last season. The Bruins have sent their
opponents to the foul line 130 times this season (an average of 26 times per
game) while attempting just 69 shots at the charity stripe (13.8 per game).
A Little History
Sunday's
game with be the fourth all-time meeting between the Sycamores and Bruins, with
Belmont holding a 2-1 advantage in the series. ISU and BU first met during the
1975-76 season, with the Bruins claiming a one-point victory, 65-64. Belmont
picked up their second victory the following season, 78-56, with Indiana State
earning their victory in the 1978-79 season, 63-61.
Mattox Ties Career Highs
Against IUPUI
Senior Deja Mattox tied her
career highs in points and rebounds in ISU's 65-40 victory over IUPUI last
Tuesday in Terre Haute, as the Peru, Ind., forward led the Sycamores to the win
inside Hulman Center. Mattox ended the night with 22 points and nine rebounds,
knocking down three 3-pointers for the game. She also scored 22 points against
USC Upstate and Illinois State last season, while pulling down nine boards
against UNI on New Year's Eve one season ago.
Closing In On 1,000 Points
Seniors Shannon Thomas and
Brittany Schoen are getting within striking distance of joining the 1,000 Point
Club at Indiana State. Thomas enters Sunday's game just 92 points away, sitting
at 908 for her career after tallying 40 points through four games this season.
Schoen sits at 822 (178 away) after tossing in 41 points this season.
First Career Starts
Three Sycamores have made
their first career starts in ISU Blue this season, in sophomores Sadie Oyer and
Andrea Rademacher and freshman Natasha Zurek. Oyer, a forward from Huntsville,
Ohio, played 27 minutes against Detroit, hitting a pair of free-throws while
also recording one assist and one steal. Zurek, a point guard from St. John,
Ind., started against Notre Dame in the second round of the Preseason WNIT,
going for three points, four rebounds and four assists in 16 minutes of action.
Rademacher earned the starting nod against IUPUI, scoring eight points and
grabbing five rebounds in 27 minutes on the court.
More Than Half
Senior Brittany Schoen has
pushed her career total for triples to 208 while fellow senior Shannon Thomas
has upped her blocked shots count to 168. Both of those totals rank higher than
the rest of the 2011-12 Sycamores put together, as the remaining roster checks
in with 163 treys and 44 rejections. Senior Deja Mattox is second to both of
her fellow seniors in each category, totaling 83 3-pointers and 24 blocks for
her career.
Dominant At Home
Thanks to the home-court
advantage of the Hulman Center, the Indiana State women's basketball team has
been dominant in Terre Haute over the past 10 seasons. Since the 2002-03 season,
ISU has played 122 games inside Hulman Center, coming away with victories on 95
occasions. ISU is 2-1 at home this season, topping Detroit and IUPUI in the
non-conference season.
Double-Doubles
Senior center Shannon Thomas
recorded her 19th career double-double on Friday, Nov. 18 against Chattanooga,
tossing in 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. In those 19 games that
Thomas has went over 10-and-10, the Sycamores have gone 11-8 overall and 9-5 in
conference/tournament play.

WNIT opener took place on Friday, Nov. 11, or 11/11/11. ISU has had success in
this decade when the month, day and year can be shortened into the same number.
With their victory over Detroit this season, ISU is now 4-0 on those dates, all
the games taking place inside Hulman Center in Terre Haute.

Thomas Moves Up In ISU
Record Book
Senior Shannon Thomas passed
Amy Amstutz (660 -- 1996-99) in the Indiana State record book against Detroit,
moving into the top 10 in career rebounds. Thomas needed just two rebounds to
sit alone in 10th place for her career, but pulled down six boards against the
Titans. The Springboro, Ohio, product enters Sunday's game with 683 rebounds
for her career, needing 19 more to pass Amy Vanderkolk (702 -- 1985-89) for
ninth place.
No Streaking Allowed
ISU did not have a streak of
winning or losing of more than two games throughout the entire 2010-11 season,
the only team in the MVC without a streak in either direction. The Sycamores
had six two-game winning streaks and six two-game losing skids during the
season. The last time ISU had a three-game streak of winning or losing came on
Feb. 18-26, 2010, as ISU picked up wins over Evansville, Northern Iowa and
Bradley. ISU's streak of consecutive games without going for three wins or
three losses now sits at 40 games.
Women's Basketball Tabbed
Fifth In Preseason Poll
The Indiana State women's
basketball team has been picked to finish fifth in the Missouri Valley
Conference for the upcoming 2011-12 season, as announced by the league office
during Media Day in St. Louis on Tuesday (Oct. 25). Head coaches, sports
information directors and members of the media vote in the poll.
Thomas Named To Preseason
All-MVC Team
Senior center Shannon Thomas
earned preseason accolades, being selected to the five-member preseason
all-conference squad. The Springboro, Ohio, product was a Second Team All-MVC
selection last season, leading the conference with an average of 8.6 rebounds
per game while placing eighth in scoring, at 13.1 points per contest.
Joining Thomas on the
Preseason All-MVC team where Missouri State's Casey Garrison and Christiana
Shorter, Wichita State's Haleigh Lankster and Creighton's Carli Tritz. MSU's
Garrison was named the Preseason Player of the Year for the second straight
season.
Sending It Back
Senior Shannon Thomas is the
career leader in blocked shots at Indiana State, entering Sunday's game with
168 rejections for her career. The Springboro, Ohio, product passed Laura
Rudolphi for the school record during the MVC Tournament last season, currently
sitting in ninth place in MVC history and just 29 away from breaking into the
top five.
Schoen Moves Up Three-Point
List
Senior Brittany Schoen
continues to march up the Indiana State career standings for three-point field
goals made, currently sitting in fourth place with 208 for her career. The
Elizabeth, Ind., product is six treys away from the top three, with third place
being held by Lisa Verhoff, who hit 214 from 2002-06. Kelsey Luna (263 --
2006-10) and Kourtney Mennen (256 -- 1999-03) hold down the top two spots at
Indiana State for career 3-pointers.

Indiana
State returns to Terre Haute and Hulman Center for its next game, facing
another Tennessee opponent in the University of Tennessee at Martin on
Wednesday. Nov. 30. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. between the Sycamores and
Skyhawks.
