TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—The Indiana State women's basketball team (1-1) got behind early and could never recover as the No. 2 ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (2-0) defeated the Sycamores 99-34 in the second round of the WNIT.
The Irish won the opening tip but senior guard Brittany Schoen came up with a steal for the Sycamores just two seconds into the game. The Irish then took over and went on an 18-0 run to start the game.
Junior guard Deja Mattox finally got the Sycamores on the board with a layup coming with 14:32 left in the first half.
The Irish continued to apply full court pressure to the Sycamore offense who was playing without junior point guard Taylor Whitley who sat out due to a knee injury. At halftime the Sycamores trailed the Irish by a score of 58-15.
After the break the Sycamores came out strong on defense, with freshman guard Natasha Zurek getting a block for the Sycamores. However, the Irish once again came out firing on offense and started the second half on a 10-0 run. Sophomore guard Anna Munn ended the Irish run, knocking down a three-pointer off an assist from freshman guard Jessica Valley.
The Sycamores could find no match for the intensity of the Irish and fell to the No. 2 ranked Fighting Irish by a final score of 99-34.
Munn led the Sycamores with 13 points, three rebounds and went 3-6 from beyond the arc. Senior center Shannon Thomas led the team in rebounding with five.
As a team, Indiana State shot 30.6% from the floor and had a total of 36 turnovers.
The 34 points the Sycamores scored was the fifth lowest point total ever by a Sycamore team.
Indiana State will next play this coming weekend in a consolation WNIT game, however, the matchup and location has not yet been announced.
