WICHITA, KAN. ? The Indiana State Volleyball team dropped another Missouri Valley Conference contest on the road Saturday night as they were swept 3-0 (17-25, 15-25, 16-25) by the Wichita State Shockers in the Charles Koch Arena.
It was the third straight loss for the Sycamores who drop to 8-8 overall and 0-3 in the Valley. Indiana State will host a pair of Missouri Valley opponents next weekend as they entertain the Drake Bulldogs on Friday and the Creighton Bluejays on Saturday. Both games start at 8 p.m. (ET). Wichita State improved to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the Valley with the win.
Junior Stacy Qualizza led the Sycamore offense with 10 kills while sophomore Morgan Dall had nine and sophomore Christie Fullenkamp five. Junior Shelbi Fouty had 26 assists with junior Kiya James recording nine digs.
Emily Adney and Camri Zwiesler had nine kills each to pace the Shockers with Sarah McGee and Amanda Backes recording six each. Mary Elizabeth Hooper had 28 assists to go along with a game high six blocks while Sarah Waldorf had 15 digs.
The Sycamores were limited to just 29 kills and a .084 hitting percentage by the Wichita State defense while the Shockers racked up 39 kills and a .299 hitting percentage.
Indiana State's only lead in the opening set came early as a Dall kill gave ISU a 2-1 advantage. The Shockers scored two straight points before a Qualizza kill tied the set up at three. Wichita State took control from there and posted a 25-17 win.
The second set was nearly a duplicate of the opening except that ISU had the lead twice early in the set, the first at 2-1 off a kill by Fullenkamp and the second at 3-2 off a Shocker service error by Adney. A four point run gave Wichita State the lead for good and the Shockers were able to hold back the Sycamores for a 25-15 win.
The Sycamores still couldn't get momentum on their side in the third set with Wichita State using a 5-0 run to break the third tie of the set and take a 10-5 advantage. Indiana State could not get back to even after that and dropped the third set 25-16.
James moved into seventh place on the career dig list at Indiana State as the Sycamore junior now has 974 career digs. She moved past Tracy Swystun who had 966 from 1991-1994. She should become the seventh ISU athlete to record 1,000 career digs sometime next weekend.
