HUTSON, MARTIN, CLAY SET TO COMPETE ON DAY TWO
OF NCAA INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP
FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. ? It was a disappointing first day for the Indiana State Sycamores at the 2010 NCAAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday with senior Erica Moore just missing a chance to compete in the 800 meter finals and junior Kelsey Hanley finishing 13th in the women's weight throw.
“It was a disappointing day because we didn't score in two events that we thought we could have,” John Gartland, Indiana State women's track & field coach said.
Moore finished ninth in the preliminaries of the women's 800 meters run with a time of 2:06.09, missing the finals by just two-tenths of a second.
“Erica got boxed in early and ran behind people most of the way,” Gartland said. “She finally did break free and gave it everything she had. It was a very good time but just not quick enough.”
Stephanie Brown of Arkansas earned the final spot into Saturday's final with a time of 2:05.89. Phoebe Wright of Tennessee had the fastest time in the preliminaries at 2:04.55.
Hanley had a throw of 61'-2.75” (18.66 meters) on her first attempt in the women's weight throw but fouled on her second two attempts and failed to make the finals.
“Kelsey never could quite get into rhythm today,” Gartland said. “She had some good throws but couldn't get them inbounds.”
D'Ana McCarty of Louisville won the event with a throw of 74'-8.25” (22.76 meters).
Seniors Kylie Hutson and Lauren Martin along with junior Major Clay will be competing on Saturday. Clay will compete in the men's high jump starting at 5:45 p.m. (ET) Saturday with Hutson beginning competition in the women's pole vault at 6 p.m. (ET), and Martin competing in the triple jump at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
