SOUTH BEND, IND. ? Indiana State senior Erica Moore and sophomore Jeremiah Vaughan continued their assault on Indiana State records this weekend as Moore posted her second fastest 800 meter time of her career and Vaughan came through with a personal best in the mile and the third best in school history.
Moore took third place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.20 which is just short of her ISU record performance of 2:04.94 which she set on the same track a year ago during the Stan Lyons Invitational. The time also puts her into the top 10 of the nation and could rank her as high as fifth after the weekend results are posted.
“She ran a really good race against some very good competition,” John Gartland, Indiana State women's track & field coach, said.
Vaughan ran a personal best of 4:06.81 in finishing second in the mile which is the third best time in Indiana State history and moves him into the top 50 in the nation. The Sycamore sophomore was just a tenth of a second out of first with Jason Bigelow of Oakland winning in 4:06.71.
“We had a lot of people that responded pretty well against such outstanding competition,” John McNichols, Indiana State men's track & field coach, said. “We came up here and had a pretty good day.”
The Sycamore women 4x400 meter relay team of Stacia Weatherford, Lauren Martin, Leann Michl and Moore also had a top 10 finish Saturday, placing fourth in the event with a time of 3:44.30, finishing behind Illinois, Mississippi, and Minnesota.
“It wasn't as fast as the time they had last week but it was still a very good effort on their part,” Gartland said.
Weatherford also had a personal best in the 400 meters with a time of 57.02 which is a personal best for the freshman. She was 27th overall and the 26th collegian in the event.
On the men's side, Andrew Stull ran the seventh fastest time in school history of 48.39, a personal best, and finished 18th in the 400 meters. Major Clay finished third in the high jump with a jump of 7'-1.5” (2.17m) and Michael Roberts was the fifth collegian in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.06 in the finals. ISU's Daryl Truitt finished ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.95.
The Indiana State Sycamores picked up a victory on the opening day of the 2010 Meyo Invitational Friday as the distance medley relay team of Dustin Betz, Andrew Stull, Andrew Lepkowski, and Jeremiah Vaughan ran to the with a time of 9:59.57.
That time was just short of the provisional qualifying mark and was the third best in Indiana State history. It was also just one of four events that the Sycamores did well in at the Meyo Invitational on Friday.
Also on the men's side, Michael Disher ran the sixth fastest 5,000 meters in school history as he finished 22nd overall in 14:46.27. Craig Padgett was 30th in the event with time of 15:17.02. Colton Slack ran the 11th fastest time in school history in the 500 meters as he finished 31st with a time of 1:07.73.
The women's distance medley relay team of Kacie Klem, Leann Michl, Kaci Smith, and Kelsie Slater ran the ninth best time in Indiana State history, finishing in 12:04.13 in finishing seventh overall.
The Indiana State track & field teams will be competing at the Iowa State Classic starting next Thursday.
