ST. LOUIS, MO. ? Indiana State senior Kylie Hutson and sophomore Tra Wilson were named Missouri Valley Conference Athletes of the Week in track & field it was announced today by the league office. Hutson was named the MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week while Clay was named the MVC Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
This is the fourth straight week that the Sycamores have had multiple athletes receive recognition from the Missouri Valley Conference for their efforts on the track and in the field events.
Hutson (Terre Haute, Ind.) upped the ante on competitors in the women's pole vault, setting an Indiana State and Missouri Valley Conference record on Friday by clearing 14'-6” (4.42m) in winning the event at the Eastern Illinois University Friday Night Special. This is the fifth straight week that Hutson has cleared the automatic qualifying mark and her second straight week with the top height in the nation.
The Sycamore senior is now tied for fifth best all-time performer among collegiate women. Tracy O'Hara of UCLA cleared 4.42 meters on March 10, 2000. Hutson also had three good attempts at the NCAA record of 14'-10.25” (4.53m) which was set by Arizona's Amy Linnen in 2002.
Wilson captured the 200 meters at the Eastern Illinois University Friday Night Special with a time of 22.26 which was a season best for the sophomore and ranks him fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference with a converted time of 21.86.
Indiana State has claimed 11 of the 24 weekly honors so far this season with sophomore Jeremiah Vaughan twice named Men's Track Athlete of the Week (Feb. 2 and Feb. 9), Wilson Men's Track Athlete of the Week once (Feb. 23), senior Josh Williams (Jan. 19), sophomore Brandon Pounds (Feb. 9), and Major Clay (Feb. 16) have each been named Men's Field Athlete of the Week, Erica Moore has earned three MVC Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors (Jan. 19, Feb. 2, and Feb. 9), and Hutson has now earned three MVC Women's Field Athlete of the week honors (Feb. 2, Feb. 16, and Feb. 23).
Northern Iowa's Sam Kranz was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Week while Meredith Hayes of Southern Illinois was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
