TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Led by 22 points from junior Deja Mattox and 20 more from fellow junior Shannon Thomas, the Indiana State women's basketball team ran past the visiting USC Upstate Spartans, 92-64, in front of 6,056 fans inside Hulman Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Sycamores (5-4) never trailed against the Spartans (3-3), as ISU stormed out of the gates to a 14-2 lead through just over four minutes of play. Thomas scored seven of ISU's first 14 points, en route to her second 20-point game of the season.
Indiana State led 50-34 at the halftime break, on the strength of shooting 18-for-37 (48.6%) from the field and hitting 10-of-13 free-throw attempts. Thomas led ISU at the break with 11 points, with Mattox and junior Brittany Schoen both adding nine. Senior Kelsie Cooley chipped in eight points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Taylor Whitley added six assists and six rebounds at the break.
ISU did not let the halftime break cool down their shooting, as the Sycamores continued to expand upon their lead in second half. After ISU and USC Upstate traded baskets to start the half, ISU went on a 15-2 run to push their lead up to 26 points, capped by a layup by Whitley with 13:48 left in the game.
From there, the Sycamore lead never went below 20 points as the Sycamore cruised to victory over the Spartans.
Thomas and Mattox led ISU on Sunday, as Mattox scored over 20 points for the first time this season. Thomas also went over 20 with 24 points aginst Butler on Saturday, Dec. 4. Redshirt freshman Andrea Rademacher was next on the scoring list for ISU, totaling a career-high 14 points on six-for-nine shooting. Schoen also finished in double-figures, hitting four 3-pointers for 12 points.
Cooley and Whitley finished with nearly the same statistics, both coming close to triple-double status. Both Sycamores finished the game with eight points, nine rebounds and six assists.
For the game, ISU shot 51.4% from the field, hitting 36-of-70 shots.
ISU have the next week off from games, as the Sycamores will focus on their academics during finals week for the university. ISU hits the road for its next game, when the team travels to Martin, Tenn., for a matchup with the UT-Martin Skyhawks. UTM traveled to ISU earlier in the season, with the Sycamores coming out on top, 70-62, behind 20 points from Schoen and 16 more from Whitley.
