Teri Moren Named Indiana State Women's Basketball Head Coach
Head coach Teri Moren enters her first year at the helm of the Indiana State women's basketball program in 2010-11, having been hired on April 3. Moren, a Seymour, Ind., native, recently completed her third season as associate head coach at Georgia Tech in 2009-10, where the Yellow Jackets had made three NCAA Tournament appearances and enjoyed three consecutive 20-win seasons.
Moren previously served as head coach at the University of Indianapolis for seven seasons, where she compiled a 130-73 record and coached alongside current Sycamore associate head coach Clint Weddle. The 2003 WBCA Region 4 Coach of the Year, her teams made appearances in three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournaments and earned the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles in 2002-03. Moren was also an assistant coach at Northwestern in 1999-2000 and has additional assistant coaching experience for six years at Butler. A 1992 graduate of Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation, Moren lettered four years in basketball and was a two-year starter for the Boilermakers. Her Purdue squad also earned the 1991 Big Ten Championship in Moren's junior season.
Balanced Attack
Indiana State brings a balanced scoring attack back for this season, as five letterwinners (Brittany Schoen, Shannon Thomas, Taylor Whitley, Deja Mattox and Kelsie Cooley) all averaged between 20-28 minutes played and 7-9 points per game.
Returning Starters
Indiana State returns four of their five starters from the 2009-10 squad, losing just guard Kelsey Luna to graduation.
Below is a quick look at each starter for the Lady Sycamores that is back this season:
Senior Kelsie Cooley (7.5 PPG, 4.7 RPG, .428 FG%)
Junior Brittany Schoen (8.9 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 69 3PTM)
Junior Shannon Thomas (8.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 54 blocks)
Junior Deja Mattox (7.6 PPG, 3.6 RPG, .342 3PT%)
Whitley Named To 2009-10 MVC All-Freshman Team
Sophomore Taylor Whitley looks to build off an impressive rookie campaign with the Lady Sycamores. Whitley was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team last season, becoming the first Sycamore to be named to the All-Freshman Team since Kelsey Luna did so in 2007. A native of Geneva, Ill., Whitley averaged 7.9 points and 2.8 boards per contest and started every game Jan. 8 until the end of the season. She had a career performance against Drake on Jan. 2 inside Hulman Center, finishing with 22 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and a 10-for-13 effort at the free throw line.
New Faces
From top to bottom, there are plenty of new faces on the Indiana State roster this season, led by first-year head coach Teri Moren. The Lady Sycamores also welcome five true freshmen (Nikki Gunning, Anna Munn, Consuelo Owens, Sadie Oyer and Illyssa Vivo) and one redshirt freshman (Andrea Rademacher) into the mix for the 2010-11 season.
Lady Sycamores Picked Eighth In Preseason MVC Poll
In a vote conducted by the head coaches, sports information directors and media members from around the Missouri Valley Conference, the Indiana State women's basketball team has been picked to finish in eighth for the upcoming 2010-11 season of play. The eighth slot is the lowest the Lady Sycamores have been picked in the preseason for quite some time, as the last time ISU was picked eighth or below came back before the 1996-97 season when Indiana State was picked ninth. The Lady Sycamores went on to finish in a tie for fourth that season, with an even 9-9 record in conference play.
Losing Luna
The Sycamores lost just one starter from the 2009-10 team, but it was do-everything guard Kelsey Luna. Luna led the team in nearly all categories, including: points per game (14.4), assists (105), steals (68), free throws (125), free throw percentage (93.3%), minutes played (1,708) and field goals (133). Luna was not just the ISU leader in free throw percentage, as the senior guard led the nation in free throw percentage last season.
