TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- After being down 14 points halfway through the first half, the Sycamores battled back and lost a 63-58 heartbreaker to Michigan Monday night at Hulman Center.
Both teams got off to a slow start as both teams were whistled for offensive fouls to start the game.
The Wolverines got on the board first though with a bucket down low. Sophomore point guard Taylor Whitley answered the Wolverines call though with a 3-pointer to give the Sycamores a 3-2 lead.
At the first media timeout the score was deadlocked at 9 each. However, after the media timeout the Wolverines went on a 14-2 run leading to the second media timeout where the Wolverines held a 23-11 lead.
The Sycamores did not give up though and junior shooting guard Brittany Schoen got the offense started with her first of six 3-pointers of the game and the team battled back to cut the deficit to only four at halftime and went into the locker room trailing only 29-25.
In the second half the Sycamores closed the gap to one with at 28-29 just three minutes into the half.
The Sycamores stayed close to the Wolverines for the majority of the half, however, Michigan pulled ahead by 9 at 39-30 with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Once again the Sycamores stormed back and off two Schoen 3-pointers and a long 3-pointer by freshman guard Anna Munn, the Sycamores stormed back to tie the game at 43.
After a Wolverine free throw Whitley answered back with a 3-pointer and Schoen buried an NBA-range 3-pointer to put the Sycamores ahead 49-44 and to bring the deafening crowd at Hulman Center to their feet.
Down the stretch the Sycamores missed a few key free throws which led to a three point Wolverine lead with just 30 seconds left. The Sycamores had a multiple chances on their final possession to tie the game but the Sycamores could not connect on their 12th 3-pointer of the game and fell to the Wolverines 63-58.
Schoen led the team playing a complete game and had 20 points off six 3-pointers, and added six rebounds and two steals.
Whitley also reached double figures for the Sycamores with 14 points, nine assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Senior forward Kelsie Cooley was the teams leading rebounder with 10.
As a team the Sycamores outrebounded the Wolverines 42-35 and had 15 offensive rebounds.
The Sycamores will next travel to Miami, Fla., Friday for the Florida International Tournament where they will face Western Michigan.
