MANHATTAN, Kan. - A late run by the Kansas State Wildcats on Wednesday night gave the Indiana State women's basketball team their first loss of the season, as the Sycamores fell 64-48 to the Wildcats inside Bramlage Coliseum in front of 2,854 fans.
The final score does not do the Sycamores justice, however, as Indiana State (2-1) battled Kansas State (3-0) tough from the opening whistle. Junior Brittany Schoen and sophomore Taylor Whitley both finished with 12 points to lead ISU, while senior Kelsie Cooley grabbed nine rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth first-half inside Bramlage Coliseum, as the Sycamores and Wildcats traded leads five times and held a tie score on four more occasions. Kansas State took a 27-24 lead into the halftime break, on the strength of 10 first-half offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points. Whitley added seven points in the first 20 minutes, while Schoen hit a pair of 3-pointers for her six points.
The Sycamores hung with the Wildcats on Wednesday despite hitting just one field goal over a stretch of 14 minutes and 40 seconds between the first and second-half. From the 5:58 mark of the first-half until there was just 11:18 left in the game, the Sycamores could find just a jumper by Whitley with 35 seconds left in the first-half for points from the field.
The Indiana State defense held strong over their time with just one field goal, however, as the Kansas State lead only grew by only two points over the stretch of nearly 15 minutes.
ISU got within five points in the second-half, cutting the KSU lead to 45-40 when Whitley stole the ball and converted a fast-break layup with 5:49 left in the game. Kansas State went on their run after the bucket by Whitley, going on a 13-0 run over the game's next three minutes and 35 seconds to put the game out of reach for the Sycamores.
KSU's Brittany Chambers led all scorers on Wednesday, tossing in 20 points.
As a team, Kansas State won the rebounding battle 42-29, grabbing 18 offensive rebounds compared to ISU's seven. KSU's 18 offensive rebounds led to 20 second-chance points.
Indiana State returns to Hulman Center for their next game, when the Michigan Wolverines travel to Terre Haute for a contest on Monday, Nov. 22. The game is set to tip at 7:05 p.m.
