ST. LOUIS - The Missouri Valley Football Conference has honored Indiana State junior tight end Alex Jones (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) as its Offensive Player Of The Week while junior quarterback Ronnie Fouch has earned the Newcomer Of The Week as announced by the league office today (Nov. 14).
Jones earned his first MVFC Offensive Player Of The Week honors for his efforts as part of the 30-24 victory over Youngstown State this past Saturday. Jones caught five passes for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Sycamores broke a 36-game road losing streak with its 30-24 victory at Youngstown State. Jones scored on a reception of 68 yards (a career long) in the game's first quarter to give ISU its first lead at 8-7 and then hauled in an eight-yard touchdown pass in the game's third quarter to give the Sycamores a 30-17 lead which they never relinquished. Jones' 147 receiving yards is the most of his career in a single-game as are his two touchdowns.
Fouch became the MVFC Newcomer Of The Week after his record breaking day versus the Penguins. Fouch completed 16-of-23 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns in the Sycamores' 30-24 road victory over Youngstown State. Fouch's 290 yards are his most in a Sycamore uniform on the road as ISU downed a league opponent away from Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2002. His 290 yards also marks the seventh consecutive game this season in which he has recorded at least 200 passing yards in a game which is a school record for the number of 200-yard games in succession and ties the school record for most 200-yard games in a season. His four touchdowns at YSU was the third time this season in which he has passed for a quartet of touchdowns in a game and gives him 20 total passing touchdowns for the season which is also a new school record. Fouch hit Alex Jones on a 68-yard scoring pass in the first quarter and followed that up with a 50-yard touchdown pass later in the stanza. The 68-yard scoring pass was the second longest play and the second longest scoring play from scrimmage this season. Fouch added an 11-yard scoring strike to Kent just before halftime as well as an eight-yard TD to Jones in the game's third quarter.
The newcomer honor for Fouch was his second this season while Jones joins Fouch as having earned the league's offensive award this year.
Indiana State concludes the regular season on Saturday, November 20 when they travel to Southern Illinois for a key matchup. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. (ET) in Carbondale. A Sycamore victory coupled with a Western Illinois and North Dakota State defeat would give the Sycamores a 5-3 league record (which would be its most league victories in a season since joining the MVFC in 1986) and give them a second place finish which would be the best in school history.
