WICHITA, Kan. -- The Indiana State women's basketball team took a 20-point lead in the second half, but it was not enough to hold on after a comeback Shocker effort, as Wichita State took a 65-61 win at Charles Koch Arena on Thursday night. With the loss, ISU drops to 9-6 (0-4 MVC) on the season.
Three Sycamores reached double-figure scoring against WSU, led by 13 points apiece from sophomore Deja Mattox and freshman Taylor Whitley, who added a game-leading seven rebounds. Sophomore Shannon Thomas also had 11 points and a block.
Wichita State was led by Haleigh Lankster's 17 points, as well as 16 points from Jessica Diamond, who was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range.
ISU jumped out to a seven-point lead early in the first half on a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore Brittany Schoen. Baskets from Whitley and five free throws from junior Kelsie Cooley extended that to 19-9, and a trey by senior Kelsey Luna put the Sycamores up by 13. A layup from WSU's Michelle Price and a triple from Lankster narrowed it to seven, but three shots from Mattox, Thomas and freshman Moriah Hodge returned the game to 30-17.
In the final seconds of the half, Luna chipped in two charity shots before Chynna Turner's shot in the paint left it at 36-25 ISU at the half. Luna is currently on her second-longest free throw streak of the season and has now made 19 in a row since Dec. 19 against UMKC.
In the second half, the Sycamores leaned on seven points from Deja Mattox in the first five minutes to take a 52-32 lead with 15 minutes to go. The 20-point advantage was squandered, however, as Wichita State went on a 34-point offensive tear, led by 13 points on a trio of threes from Diamond. ISU managed just nine points over the rest of the half, and the Shockers pulled out a 65-61 win at home.
Indiana State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16, facing Missouri State. Tipoff is set for 2:05 p.m. (ET) at JQH Arena in Springfield, Mo.
