TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? This past Sunday at Price Field, the Indiana State softball coaching staff and members of this year's squad welcomed back several formal players as part of Alumni Day. Two of those alumni were Connie Fiems and Debbie Styx both of whom were selected to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team in 2007.
Indiana State Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman presented Fiems and Styx with recognition plaques before the start of the game for being the only two Indiana State softball players named to the MVC All-Centennial Team for their outstanding performance as Sycamores. In addition, both former players threw out the first pitch in game three against Evansville on Sunday.
Connie Fiems was Indiana State's second baseman from 1988 to 1991 where she was a two-time First Team All-MVC selection. Her offensive dominance as a Sycamore can be seen in Indiana State's all-time record books as Connie ranks first in career RBI with 85, second in career doubles with 36, and third in career batting average after hitting .335 in her four years. She was feared by pitchers at the plate as she was walked a total of 54 times as a Sycamore. Connie graduated from Indiana State in 1991 with a degree in Sports Studies.
Debbie Styx was a former pitcher at Indiana State from 1988 to 1992. She was a conference first team selection and MVC Co-MVP her last season as a Sycamore. Debbie's name appears in multiple all-time record categories at Indiana State including ERA, pitching victories, shutouts, and strikeouts. She is also at the top of the list for most career triples and is third in Indiana State history with a .382 batting average during her senior season. Debbie graduated in 1992 with a degree in Business Management.
The day seemed to go flawless for the Sycamores as they beat Evansville for the third time that weekend as several softball alumni cheered them on. After the game was over, the coaches, current players, and former players all gathered for an alumni feast outside the field. Head softball coach Brenda Coldren would like to thank everyone who participated in the alumni festivities over the weekend.
