Sycamores Finish Sixth At MVC Championships, Two Named All-Valley

PANORA, Iowa ? The Indiana State women's golf team carded the second-best team score of the final round at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships en route to a sixth place finish with a tournament total of 945. The Sycamores battled windy, cold conditions to post a final round score of 318 on the par 72, 6,081 yard Lake Panorama National Resort today (April 18).

 

Indiana State edged Creighton for sixth place in the 10 team field with a final score of 945. The ?Jays posted a final round total of 317, and finished with a score of 946. A lofty finish for the Sycamores was within grasp over most of the final round, as Northern Iowa finished fourth with a score of 941 and Missouri State was fifth at 942.

 

“Today we finished up a good solid, year of Indiana State golf,” We really played well today and I am pleased with the consistency that we showed in tough conditions. A sixth place finish is not what we had in mind coming into the week, and we are starting to wish that we had the first day of play back. We played well today and am glad we were able to rally up the leader board. Now we go back to work and get ready for next year.”

 

Illinois State won the tournament with a score of 921 while Drake was second at 933 and Wichita State finished third with a tournament total of 935.

 

Individually for the Sycamores, junior Kayley Bodine finished in a tie for sixth place after posting a team-high final round of 78. Bodine recorded scores of 74-80-78 to finish with a score of 232 which tied her with Kelly Godwin of Drake for sixth. With that finish, Bodine earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors for the first time in her career. Bodine birdied the fifth hole as she posted a 78 during the final round of play. Her 78 was tied for the second-best final round score in the field.

 

Also ranking highly for the Sycamores was junior Breanne Smith who posted scores of 79-74-80 to finish the championship with a score of 233 which was good enough to tie for eighth place. Smith posted a birdie on the No. 1 hole (which was her tenth hole of the day after the Sycamores started on No. 10) which helped her to a final round score of 80. Smith also took home All-MVC plaudits as she ranked as one of The Valley's Top Four players over the course of the season. It marks the second time in her career she has earned all-league honors.

 

Freshman Astrid Parsson finished in a tie for 13th place after posting a final round score of 80. Her tournament total was 235 after recording a 79 in the opening round and a 76 on Saturday.

 

Mackenzie Mack also enjoyed a favorable day for the Sycamores as she recorded a final round score of 80, which was boosted by her birdie on No. 18. Mack followed up rounds of 86 and 79 to leave the tournament with a tournament total of 245, which tied her for 34th place.

 

Abby Butler rounded out the Sycamores' efforts with scores of 88, 84 and 90 which placed her in 50th position.

 

Illinois State's Stacy Miller took medalist honors as she finished with a tournament score of 225.
