GREENCASTLE, IND. ? The Indiana State track and field men's team captured the Tiger Indoor Invitational on Friday while the women's team finished fourth in the meet hosted by DePauw University.

The Sycamores split their squads this weekend with part of the team travelling to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Meyo Invitational, while the other part of the team travelled to Greencastle, Ind., to compete in the Tiger Indoor Invitational.

“Despite not having a full team, the team members who were here did a great job,” Angie Martin, Indiana State assistant track and field coach, said. “The men beat Rend Lake, which was the JUCO National Champion last year, and the women had a great showing despite not competing in every event.”

Sycamore junior Kyle Hutson broke several records in winning the pole vault on Friday. Hutson went 13-feet-11.25 (4.25 meters) in establishing a new personal best and a new school record. Hutson had set the previous school record at the Terre Haute Double Dual earlier this year at 13-feet-11 (4.20 meters), a mark that automatically qualified her for the NCAA Indoor National Championships.

The effort was also a new track record at DePauw and a new meet record for the Tiger Invitational. Hutson had set the old DePauw track record last year at 4.15 meters while the Invitational record has stood for seven years.

Indiana State freshman Brandon Pounds was a double winner for the Sycamore men's team, taking the weight throw with a toss of 61-feet-04.75 (18.71 meters) and the shot put with a heave of 57-feet-06.50 (17.54 meters).

Sophomore Brian Alexander captured the mile for the Sycamore men with a time of 4:25.52 while junior Jeremy Brown won the 800 meters with a time of 1:47.43 and sophomore David Bell took first in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet-8 (2.03 meters).

Other highlights for the Indiana State women's team came from Jaquelle Spencer, who was second in the 55 meter hurdles (7.31) and fifth in the 200 meters (26.99), Katie Weber second in the 800 meters (2:21.61), Kelsey Hanley second in the weight throw at 60-feet-06.50 (18.45 meters), and Alicia Fritschi second (11-feet-11.75) and Amanda Barlage third (10-feet-11.75) in the pole vault.

For the men's team, Jeramie Gray finished third in the 55 meters (6.41) in his first meet of the indoor season. Anthony Bertoli placed second (15-feet-11), Steven Swinford third (14-feet-11) and Andrew LaMaster fourth (14-feet-11) in the pole vault with George Weed second in the shot put (51-feet-05.5), Joshua Williams third in the weight throw (60-feet-02.5) and Jon Lautzenheiser third in the long jump (22-feet-8).

The Indiana State men won the team title of the 12-team invitational with 123 points with Rend Lake was second with 110 and Vincennes third with 90 points. On the women's side, Indiana State was fourth with 68 points. Rend Lake won the title over the 11 teams competing with 147 points. Indianapolis was second with 102.5 points and Ohio Northern third with 83 points.
