TERRE HAUTE, IN ? Following two impressive victories yesterday afternoon against Dayton University to start a two-week home stand, the Sycamore softball team hit a small bump in the road after a 4-1 loss to the Hoosiers of Indiana University.
After three scoreless innings, the Hoosiers got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth thanks to a 2-RBI double from Tori Yamaguchi. Julie DiNallo and Emily Bergeson were on first and second after hitting consecutive singles followed by Yamaguchi who belted a pitch to left center to put the Hoosiers in front 2-0.
The very next inning, IU added two more runs to cushion their lead. With runners on second and third, Bergeson hit a 2-RBI single to centerfield to put the visitors ahead by a comfortable margin of 4-0.
The Sycamores would tally a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to avoid the shutout when Katie Armour came in to pinch hit with runners on first and second. Armour singled to left field, scoring Leslie Fakes from second to pick up the lone RBI for the Sycamores.
Meagan McCurdy (6-9) took the loss for Indiana State pitching her eleventh complete game of the season. McCurdy struck out five batters while walking one and giving up eight hits. Her counterpart, Hoosier pitcher Monica Wright (8-10), had six strikeouts, four walks, and gave up seven hits in seven innings of work.
The Sycamores had six players who had one or more hits including Fakes (2) and Lindsey Starwalt who recorded her second triple in two days.
Indiana State will square off against Wichita State this Saturday for a conference doubleheader slated for noon. The series finale will be played on Sunday and is also set for a noon-start.
