OMAHA, NE ? In a brother-sister rivalry at Creighton University, head coach Brent Vigness and his Bluejays (39-14, 17-3 MVC) dominated both games of a softball doubleheader against the Indiana State Sycamores (19-25-1, 7-12 MVC), defeating his sister, head coach Brenda Coldren 8-0 in game one and 4-1 in game two.
Game One
Named the MVC Pitcher of the Week for the last two weeks, sophomore Tara Oltman continued her stellar performance on the mound only allowing two hits to the Sycamores while striking out nine of just the 15 batters she faced.
After taking the initial 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, the Bluejays added on three more runs in the third and four more in the fifth to run-rule the Sycamores 8-0 in five innings.
Leslie Fakes and Katie Armour were the only Sycamore batters to hit off of Oltman. Fakes singled to the pitcher in the top half of the third inning to get on base but was caught stealing shortly after. Katie Armour singled to left field in the fifth but two batters later she was put out at second when Sam Markowski grounded into a double play.
Five Sycamore fielding errors allowed the Bluejays to score four unearned runs. Sophomore Meagan McCurdy (11-12) was on the mound and took the loss for the Sycamores, giving up nine hits while striking out two.
Game Two
With Oltman off the mound, the Sycamores were able to tally four hits off of Amanda Hess who pitched the first four innings in game two. The Bluejays again took the initial 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning after junior pitcher Katie Armour gave up a solo homerun to Michelle Koch.
The Sycamores tied the ballgame in the fourth inning when Sam Markowski hit a solo homerun of her own, her fifth of the season, over the left field fence.
After the Bluejays put another runner across home plate in the bottom half of the fourth to put the score at 2-1, Oltman came into the game before the start of the fifth inning. She faced ten batters in game two giving up zero hits and striking out four.
The Bluejays plated two more runs by the time the game ended, emerged victorious 4-1, and handed the Sycamores their fifth straight loss. Armour was the losing pitcher for the Sycamores giving up four earned runs off of eight hits.
Meredith Simpson went 2-for-2 with a walk and Markowski and Fakes were the other two Sycamore batters who tallied a hit in the game.
The third game will begin tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
