LAWRENCE, KS ? Five runs in the third inning helped the Indiana State softball team defeat the UMKC Kangaroos (2-10) 6-2 Monday afternoon at a neutral location in Lawrence, Kansas. The Sycamores record improves to 6-8.
With two outs, freshmen Leslie Fakes tripled down the right field line to ignite the Sycamore offense. Junior Christina Meyers followed with an RBI double. Katie Armour kept the momentum going by hitting a single up the middle which drove in Meyers for the second run of the inning. After a Britt Boyer walk, Audrey Childress, a sophomore from St. Louis, Missouri, stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run homer to cap off the five-run inning.
The Sycamores would tally their final run in the fifth inning when senior Kelsey Anderson singled with two runners on base that allowed the runner on second to cross home plate.
The Kangaroos tried to mount a comeback in the sixth inning tallying two hits and two runs but it wasn't enough. Sophomore pitcher Meagan McCurdy threw the first five innings striking out five. Senior Darcy Wood came in to pitch the last two innings and struck out four.
The Sycamores registered eleven hits compared to seven for the Kangaroos.
Indiana State will play Central Arkansas tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
