Cold Offensive Night Spells Doom For Sycamores In Road Loss At Bradley

PEORIA, Ill.. - Indiana State sophomore guard Kelsey Luna poured in a pair of second half 3-pointers en route to scoring 16 points, but the Sycamores turned the ball over 27 times and Bradley was able to convert that into 20 points as the Braves held serve on their homecourt in earning a 62-50 victory.

Indiana State fell to 10-10, 4-6 MVC on the season while Bradley improved to 9-12, 3-7 MVC. The Braves observed their "Think Pink" night at Robertson Fieldhouse in front of 621 fans, as part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association initiative to help fight breast cancer.

Bradley's Kelly Krumwiedie scored the first bucket of the game just over a minute in to take a 2-0 advantage, but Kelsey Luna hit a jumper from the corner in transition to knot the contest on ISU's next possession. With the score tied at six, Schilli received a post feed as she streaked down the middle of the lane to give the Sycamores its first lead of the game at 8-6 with 13:27 left before intermission.

A conventional 3-point play by Luna with 12:54 left put ISU up 11-8 and then six consecutive points by Maria Olsthoorn yielded a the Sycamores a 17-12 lead. After a Luna driving lay-up with 10:26 left before the break, the Sycamores would not score another field goal until the 5:10 mark, a dry spell of 5 minutes and 16 seconds. The Sycamores did connect on four free throws over that five minute plus span, but the ISU lead slowly began to evaporate as Bradley heated up on their offensive end.

ISU did hold a 23-19 lead with 6:18 left after a free throw by Luna, but Bradley was able inch within a point at 23-22 on the lone 3-pointer by either team in the first half off the hands of Rachel Merriman. Laura Rudolphi connected on a jumper just outside the paint with 5:10 left to break the Sycamores' scoring slump and give them a 25-22 lead.

Indiana State's offensive woes continued as the Sycamores hit just one more bucket the rest of the way, an Olsthoorn lay-up with 1:08 left before the half, but by then the Braves had stretched their lead to 31-27. The teams sprinted into the locker room with that same score after the ISU defense held Bradley scoreless on their final possession with the shot clock turned off.

Luna and Olsthoorn each scored 10 points in the first half to pace the Sycamores. Both were 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-3 at the charity stripe in leading Indiana State.

Both team traded buckets in the opening moments of the second half as Rudolphi, who scored just four points in the entire first period, opened the second stanza with four quick ones to make it 33-31. Bradley ran its advantage out to 37-31, but a triple by Luna and a conventional 3-point play by Kara Schilli made it 39-37, Bradley, with 15:35 left.

Bradley was able to take a 41-37 lead on a lay-up by Kelly Krumwiedie with 14:50 left in the game, but Rudolphi continued her hot start to the second half with another bucket which made it 43-41 with 13:01 left. After the Sycamores' 21st turnover of the game, Bradley gained control of the ball but the Sycamore defense stood tall and Leah Phillips gave ISU its first lead after the intermission on a 3-pointer with 11:02 on the clock for a 44-43 lead.

The Braves were able to swing back into the lead at 45-44 on a lay-up by Raisa Taylor, but Luna connected on her second trey after the break with 9:03 left to give ISU a 47-45 lead. Bradley inched closer at 47-46 on a free throw by Taylor with 8:12 left. Taylor hit two more charity tosses with 7:23 showing to give the Braves a 48-47 lead, and they followed that with a Taylor second chance bucket for a 50-47 lead. Skye Johnson hit a 3-pointer in transition and Devyn Flanagan followed that up with a miracle 3-pointer as the shot clock sounded as the Braves held a 56-47 lead with 5:36 left.

ISU cut the lead down to 56-50 with 4:28 remaining on a free throw by freshman Kelsie Cooley, but that would be as close as the Sycamores would get. Cooley's charity toss marked the final point for Indiana State, while Bradley added seven more points to take the 62-50 victory.

Luna' 16 points paced Indiana State, while both Olsthoorn and Rudolphi each scored 10. Olsthoorn added seven rebounds while Cooley had five. Krumwiedie and Taylor scored 13 each to lead the Braves.

The Sycamores turned the ball over 27 times in the game, giving up 20 points off those miscues to the Braves. Bradley was charged with 22 turnovers and ISU turned them into 18 points.

The 31-27 halftime lead by Bradley broke a streak of five consecutive games in which Indiana State had held the scoreboard advantage at the half. Bradley also led by in the season's earlier game at Hulman Center by a 41-34 margin. That was one of two games this year that the Sycamores trailed at the half, but came back to earn the victory. Indiana State scored just 23 points after the half tonight in falling.

Rudolphi grabbed two rebounds in the game to put her over the 500 career rebound mark. She is just the 10th player in the history of the program to record both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.

The Indiana State Sycamores return to action on Saturday, February 9 when they travel to Northern Iowa for a road contest against the Panthers. Tip-off from the McLeod Center is set for 8:05 p.m. (EST). The Panthers downed Illinois State by a score of 64-62 tonight.
