WICHITA, Kan.
? In a game that had just about everything, the one thing it lacked was a
bucket for the Indiana State Sycamores in the final minute, as they fell to the
homestanding Wichita State Shockers in front of 1,412 fans at Charles Koch
Arena on Friday night.
ISU falls to 8-8, 2-4 MVC while Wichita
State improved to 7-12, 1-6 MVC.
Indiana State
came out cold as they missed each of their first ten shots from the field,
including five attempts from behind the 3-point line. Junior Leah Phillips
found the bucket finally for the Sycamores with the first of two opening half
treys at the 14:44 mark to inch ISU
back to within one point, 6-5, early.
With the Sycamores continuing to hover around the 25% shooting
mark from the field, Leah Phillips once again provided a spark with 10:46 left
in the first half as she banged home another triple for six first half points.
ISU took its largest lead of the first half after a pair of
Maria Olsthoorn free throws with 7:04
left before the break which gave ISU a 22-17 advantage. The Shockers then
embarked on a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half to take a 24-22 advantage
with just over five minutes left as the spurt was capped on 3-pointer by
Jennifer Degarmo.
The Sycamores doubled up the Shockers by a 6-3 count over
the final five minutes of the first half as Angela Phillips scored all six of
those points. ISU was able to overcome a sluggish first half, which saw them
hit just 28.6% of their shots from the field and commit 14 turnovers in taking
a 28-27 lead into the locker room.
Wichita State
came out in the second half and scored the first four points, but the Sycamores
went on a quick 7-0 spurt to answer behind a jumper from Rudolphi and five
consecutive points by Angela Phillips for a 35-31 lead.
After a 4-0 run by the Shockers to knot the score at 35, in
a game of runs, the Sycamores then took their turn with an 8-2 spurt over the
next two and half minutes to mount a 43-37 lead with 11:52 showing on the clock
prompting WSU head coach Jane Albright to take a timeout.
The spurt consisted of three consecutive points by Kara
Schilli off the bench, and then a pair of free throws by Annie Bankhead as she
was fouled after a steal and fast break opportunity. With ISU holding onto a
40-37 lead, Luna connected on her first triple of the game to stake the
Sycamores to a 43-37 advantage with 11:52
left. The opportunity was provided via another Bankhead steal.
The Shockers found themselves up 58-53 with just under six
minutes to go as they went on a 13-3 run with 5:53
left.
Rudolphi converted a 3-point play with a lay-up and foul
shot to trim the lead down to 58-56 and after Whitney Rice hit a lay-up on the
other end, Luna posted a lay-in of her own to make it 60-58 with 4:59 left in the game.
Wichita's Kiki
Stephens scored the game's next four points to take a 64-58 lead, but Leah
Phillips kept the Sycamores in the game with a trey to trim the advantage down
to 64-61. After a Kyrie Kinder lay-in, Luna came down at the other end and
buried a 3-pointer to make it 66-64 with just over two minutes remaining.
After WSU's Kinder and Rudolphi traded baskets with just
over a minute to go to make it 68-66, the Shockers were able to score each of
the game's final six points to secure the 74-66 victory. The Shockers hit four
charity tosses in the final 49 seconds to secure their first league win of the
season.
With the loss, the Sycamores dropped their fourth MVC game
of the season, all on the road.
ISU was paced in the game by Rudolphi, who scored 18 points.
She hit 6-of-14 attempts from the field and was 6-of-8 at the free throw line
as she reached 992 career points, just eight shy of the 1,000-point milestone
for her career.
Angela Philips added 17 points and Luna rebounded from a
rough start to drain a trio of second half 3-pointers in scoring 15 points.
The Sycamores finished the game by hitting 35.1% of their
shots from the field, but suffered from 22 turnovers. The Shockers were able to
convert those miscues into 21 points. WSU hit 43.9% of their shots from the
field in the game.
The Shockers owned a 34-14 advantage in the paint. Each team
pulled down 38 rebounds in the contest.
For Wichita State,
Kiki Stephens battled foul trouble for much of the second half to pace the
Shockers with 17 points.
The Sycamores conclude the current three-game roadswing on
Sunday, January 27 when they face off against Missouri
State. It will mark Indiana
State's final appearance at Hammons
Student Center,
as the Lady Bears will move to a new arena next season. Sunday's tip-off is
slated for 3:05 p.m. (EST) and the
game can be heard live on WISU-FM (89.7) as well as GoSycamores.com.
