Indiana State Women's Golf Returns To Action This Weekend At Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The Indiana State women's golf team, under the direction of head coach Mike Whitson, travels this weekend (Sept. 29-Oct. 1) to the Bluegrass State to participate in the Lady Wildcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky.

The extremely competitive field includes: Alabama, Arkansas, Central Florida, Florida, Indiana State, Illinois, Kentucky, Marshall, Memphis, Miami, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi State, Richmond and South Florida.

With early morning tee times set for each day of the tournament, the Sycamores will face off against some of the toughest competition it has faced since beginning varsity play last year.

“This is a very tough field for us to play against, but we feel that we can be very competitive with some of the best teams in the nation this weekend,” Whitson said. “Our team also has the chance to experience one of the premier golf courses in the Southeast, and we look forward to the challenges this tournament will present.”

Leading the way for Indiana State in their first tournament of the fall season were freshman Jessica Borstrand and sophomore Breanne Smith at the The Brickyard Invitational. Both Sycamore golfers finished in a tie for sixth individually, with a two-day score of 151. Smith carded a level par 72 on day one, but finished with a 79 in the final round. Borstrand was able to follow up a 78 in her first collegiate golf round with a 73 in the final round.  Her 73 on Tuesday marked the fourth-lowest round of the day among all 65 golfers.

On the first day of the Brickyard Invitational, the Sycamores recorded a team score of 298, the lowest in the program's history.

The Lady Wildcat Invitational is a three-day, three-round tournament which will be contested on the par-72, 6,157-yard University Club, Big Blue Course. Memphis is the defending champion of the tournament.

The Sycamores tee-off at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the first of their three rounds of play. Live stats can be found at www.golfstate.com.
