Indiana State rode the
pitching of freshman Darcy Wood in the day's first game at Drake en
route to a 1-0 victory, but could not overcome the Bulldogs' seven
runs in the nightcap in falling 7-2. Indiana State moved to 9-17
overall and 4-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference while Drake stands
at 14-15 overall and 6-7 in the Valley.
Freshman designated player Susan
Slycord hit her second home run of the week to propel the Drake
softball team to a 7-2 win over Indiana State in game two of an
MVC doubleheader at Buel Field.
Indiana State won game one behind a solo home run in the top of
the seventh inning by Melissa Biniewicz. Wood tossed a no-hitter
into the seventh inning for the Sycamores, until the Bulldogs came
up with two consecutive hits with two outs. The Drake rally was
squashed on an infield grounder to end the game.
Drake junior pitcher Jessica Hicks also tossed a two-hitter and
retired 11 batters in the game with only two walks.
The Bulldogs found their swing in game two, as Slycord slugged a
two-RBI home run, scoring sophomore outfielder Jenna Wilkin who
also collected a hit in the inning.
Sophomore shortstop Lindsay Larry slapped a sacrifice run in the
second inning before Drake erupted for four runs in the third.
Slycord singled, followed by another single by junior designated
player Shanna Cook. The duo advanced to second and third on a wild
pitch before sophomore outfielder Emily Hajduk singled them home.
Freshman first baseman Marilyn Buss capped off the scoring on a
two-RBI single that plated junior second baseman Jamie Desjarlais
and Hajduk.
Indiana State scored in the second and fourth innings on RBI
singles by Biniewicz.
Freshman pitcher Kristin Birocci allowed eight hits and struck out
four batters for the Bulldogs. Drake pounded out 11 hits, led by
Cook, who batted three-for-four. Slycord and Hajduk each had two
hits for Drake.
The Bulldogs wrap up the MVC series with Indiana State in a noon
game Sunday at Buel Field.
