John Marcum completed his first season on the coaching staff at Indiana State in 2012-13, assisting the Sycamores to an 18-win season and a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2005-06. Marcum came to ISU after spending two seasons as the head coach at California Baptist University.

Indiana State posted an 18-13 record in 2012-13, advancing to the Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). ISU’s 18 wins were their most since 2006-07 and the team’s 10-8 record within the Missouri Valley Conference was ISU’s best since 2008-09.

Defense was key to Indiana State’s success in 2012-13, as the Sycamores set a program record for the fewest points allowed per game for a single season. Indiana State held 10 opponents to less than 50 points in a game while their opponents averaged 55.5 points per game for the season.

Marcum posted a 47-12 record in two seasons at CBU, leading the team in his first season to a 27-8 record that set the school record for wins in a single season. The Lancers captured their first ever conference championship in Marcum's first season in 2010-11, reaching as high as No. 3 in national rankings while making the school's first national tournament appearance since 1982.

Prior to taking the head job at CBU, Marcum spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at NAIA-member Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., from 2002-2010. He served as an assistant with the men's basketball team from 2002-2006 before assisting on the coaching staff for the women's team from 2007-2010. During his tenure with the women's program, the Bison went 92-14 and were 60-6 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, winning consecutive conference titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Marcum played baseball and graduated from Oklahoma Baptist in 1997 with a bachelor's in secondary education/history. He was a member of OBU's NAIA World Series team in 1996 and served as the president of OBU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. He earned his master's in secondary education/physical education in 2003 from East Central University. In 2002, he served as an assistant coach to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the Oklahoma Storm of the United States Basketball League, leading the Storm to the USBL championship.

He and his wife, Carmen, have three children, Abby, Matty and Cooper. His wife, Carmen, was a two-time All-American in basketball while at Oklahoma Baptist.

"I am super excited about John joining the staff at ISU," said head coach Teri Moren. "John's record speaks for itself and his ability to recruit quality student-athletes stood out in the interview process. John has contacts internationally, at the junior college level and within high schools and will undoubtedly expand our recruiting. He's a high-energy individual that has a great basketball family."
