Anthony Bertoli

Anthony Bertoli is in his fifth season with Indiana State as the multi-events and sprints coach. Bertoli made his return home to the Sycamore family in 2017, as he was a member of the track and field team from 2005-2009, and a volunteer coach in 2010.

Bertoli's 2021-22 men's sprints group saw a high level of success throughout the indoor and outdoor season, helping the Sycamores win three of the four MVC Track and Field Championships. JaVaughn Moore continued his development into one of the best sprinters to ever don the Blue and White, setting the school record in both the indoor 60-meter dash (6.63) and outdoor 100-meter dash (10.13) on his way to MVC titles in both events. Noah Malone (6.79 60m/10.34 100m) and Jarel Shaw (6.80 60m/10.47 100m) both found their way into the top-10 in program history in the 60-meter dash during the indoor season and the 100-meter dash during the outdoor season, while Moore finished the year ranked second in the 200-meter dash both indoors (21.11) and outdoors (20.72). Indiana State's 4x100-meter relay team of Shaw, Moore, Tahj Johnson and Malone ran the only sub-40 second time in the MVC (39.99). For his accomplishments, Moore was named the MVC Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the outdoor championships. He and Malone both qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Indiana State's multis also had a banner year during the 2021-22 season under Bertoli, as Kamille Gaskin-Griffith and Eva Grace Quinlan earned all-conference honors during both the indoor and outdoor season. Gaskin-Griffith became the first Sycamore to win the heptathlon at the MVC Outdoor Championships since 2010 and earned runner-up honors in the pentathlon at the MVC Indoor Championships. Quinlan finished second in the heptathlon at the outdoor championships and third in the pentathlon at the indoor championships.

The 2020-21 season saw the Sycamores continue to grow as one of the top sprints groups in the MVC under Bertoli's direction. JaVaughn Moore swept the 100-meter (10.46) and 200-meter (21.03) titles at the MVC Outdoor Championships, while the 4x100-meter relay team of Jhivon Wilson, Matthew Lewis-Banks, Moore and Noah Malone set the school record in the event of 39.76. Moore also won his second consecutive indoor title in the 60-meter dash at 6.74 and placed second in the 200-meter dash at 21.78, with Jarel Shaw also earning All-MVC honors in the 60-meter dash at 6.82. On the women's side, Mirlege Castor ran a season-best time of 7.63 in the 60-meter dash, ranking among the conference leaders in the event.

Indiana State's success under Bertoli also translated to the world stage in the 2020-21 season, as Noah Malone qualified for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo as part of Team USA. Malone won three medals (one gold, two silver) and currently holds the T12 Paralympic World Record in both the 100-meter dash (10.34) and 200-meter dash (21.10), both of which were set while competing for Indiana State.

Bertoli oversaw a strong men's sprinting group during the 2020 indoor season. Under Bertoli's direction, sophomore JaVaughn Moore capture the men's 60-meter dash title with the second-fastest time in school history of 6.71. Moore also earned All-MVC honors in the men's 200-meter dash, placing second while clocking the seventh-fastest time in ISU history of 21.57. The sophomore was also named the MVC Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete.

During the 2019 indoor season, Bertoli helped coach Ayanna Morgan to a Most Valuable Female Athlete and Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete honor to go along with All-MVC honors for Richard Griffifth in the heptathlon. Kim Jackson also garnered All-Valley honors with a third place finish in the women's pole vault.

Bertoli's athletes had an outstanding 2019 outdoor season, capped off by an MVC Championship in the pole vault for Riley Smith, who went on to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Callan Whitehouse also earned All-MVC honors by placing second in the pole vault. Griffith completed an impressive final campaign, earning third in the decathlon for the Sycamores.

In his first season with the Sycamores, Bertoli guided three Sycamores to All-MVC performances. During the indoor championships Emily Brady placed third in the pole vault and Ayanna Morgan earned a third place finish in the pentathlon. Kim Jackson earned an All-MVC honor by finishing as the runner-up in the pole vault at the MVC Outdoor Championships.

Before his time at Indiana State, Bertoli served a six-year stint at the University of Northern Iowa as an assistant coach for the pole vault, multi-events, sprints/hurdles and javelin.

While at UNI, Bertoli has had the opportunity to coach some of the nation's best athletes in multi-events and short sprints. Most recently, Bertoli coached the standout UNI sprinter, Brandon Carnes, in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, Carnes captured the MVC Outdoor Championships in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, earning a trip to the NCAA West Regional for both and a trip to the NCAA Finals in Eugene for the 100, where he earned Honorable Mention All-American honors. During the indoor season, Carnes won both the 60 and 200-meter dashes at the MVC Indoor Championships, and went on to earn Second-Team All-American honors in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. During the 2015 season, Carnes won the same events at the MVC championships as 2016, and competed at the outdoor NCAA West Regional in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. At the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Carnes earned Second-Team All-American honors in the 200.

Bertoli also had the chance to coach former UNI standout and All-American Paige Knodle, who in 2016 set MVC records in both the pentathlon and 60-meter hurdles at the MVC Indoor Championships, and earned a berth to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon, where she earned Second-Team All-American honors. During the 2016 outdoor season, he coached Knodle to two MVC Championships in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles, as well as Most Valuable Female Athlete and Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete. She went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon with an eighth-place finish and a UNI record 5,833 points. Bertoli has also worked with UNI and MVC greats Ethan Miller and Daniel Gooris, both of whom earned All-American honors while working with him.

Prior to his time at UNI, Bertoli served as an assistant coach at Troy University in 2011 and a volunteer assistant coach at Indiana State in 2010.

During his time as a volunteer assistant for the Sycamores, Bertoli had the opportunity to work alongside Coach Jeff Martin in helping coach a Sycamore legend, Kylie Hutson, who is an MVC record-holder and four-time NCAA Champion in the pole vault.

Bertoli graduated from Indiana State in 2009 with a degree in Exercise Science. He is currently certified by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as a jumps and a throws specialist. He is also a USA Track & Field (USATF) Level II jumps coach. He has attended USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camps for both jumps and combined events.
