Antone Gray

Antone Gray was named an assistant coach of Indiana State men's basketball in April 2023.

Gray comes to Indiana State from Niagara University and brings nearly a decade of collegiate coaching experience with him to Terre Haute.

"Anytime I am hiring an assistant coach, I want to bring in someone who brings value in a multitude of areas. In Antone Gray we get a coach that excels in recruiting, brings great value to our player development program, and has an elite ability to connect with people of all backgrounds," said Coach Schertz. "I am truly excited to work alongside of Tone and can't wait for our players and fans to reap the benefits of having him as part of our family."

In his lone season with Niagara as an assistant coach in 2022-23, Gray helped lead the Purple Eagles to their first winning season in seven years at 16-15 overall and 10-10 in MAAC play. In addition to recruiting efforts, Gray worked primarily with the guards including First Team All-MAAC guard Noah Thomasson who led the league in scoring (20.1 ppg) in 2022-23.

Gray joined the Purple Eagles after four seasons (2018-22) as an assistant coach at Brown University. During his time there, the Bears had the most wins in a three-year span in program history. Their 20-win season in 2018-19 marked a program record for wins in a season and earned the team a postseason berth as the Bears appeared in the CBI. Gray recruited back-to-back three-star recruits (Malachi Ndur and Nana Owusu-Ananae), which were the highest ever to commit to and attend Brown. He also mentored two of the top-10 leading scorers in program history and worked closely with Brown's guards.

Prior to Brown, Gray was an AAU basketball coach in 2018 for the 16U Nike EYBL Expressions Elite where he worked closely with active top-100 high school prospects.

He began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Maine from 2014-18 where he mentored two all-conference performers. Gray worked with the guards at Maine and assisted a group of student-athletes with their academics.

Gray coached high school basketball from 2011-14 including a stint as the head varsity basketball coach at Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex in 2013-14. In his only season at the helm, he guided his squad to a 19-8 overall record including an Interscholastic League Division III State Championship. Gray's team led one of the most prolific offenses in the state as his team led Rhode Island with 89.7 points per game and 1,418 overall points.

He began his coaching career in 2011 as a skills and fundamentals trainer at CAMP ERROL in Providence, R.I. where he trained both professional basketball players that competed in the NBA and overseas and college basketball players that played at Providence, Rhode Island, Brown, Yale and Johnson and Wales.

"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to join Coach Schertz, the staff, and the players here at Indiana State University in such an ultra-competitive conference as the Missouri Valley," said Gray. "When you talk about tradition, it gets no better than ISU. I can't wait to learn, grow, and have an impact on the players on the court and in the community. Roll Trees!"

Gray was a four-year player at Rhode Island College from 2007-11 and was inducted into the Rhode Island College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. He helped the Anchormen to four NCAA Tournament appearances and three Little East Conference Tournament championships. He is a member of the 1,000 Point Club and has the third-most assists (420) in program history. Gray earned all-league honors all four of his seasons and was part of the United States Intercollegiate International Tour in the summer of 2010.

He earned his bachelor's degree at Rhode Island in 2014 with a major in sociology and minor in communications.
