In his first season as an offensive assistant coach for the Indiana State football program is Alex Sewall.
Sewall completed a successful career with the Sycamores in 2011, hightlighted by being named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team. He was also been named First Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference, MVFC All-Academic as well as a Capital One Academic All-District Five Team member as a senior. Sewall was the 33rd Sycamore all-time in all sports to earn Academic All-American status and the eighth Indiana State football player. He became the first Sycamore football player to be named an Academic All-American since Dan Millington placed on the second team in 2009.
Additionally, Sewall was the first Sycamore football player to be named to the Academic All-America First Team since Michael Eads took the same honor in 1972. Sewall is one of just three Sycamore football players all-time to be named a First Team Academic All-American. He is the 15th student-athlete at Indiana State to ever be named a First Team Academic All-American.
Sewall finished his career with 358 total tackles to become just the 13th all-time member of the Indiana State 300 tackle club and his total is the sixth-best in the history of the Sycamore football program.
He ranked third in the MVFC in solo tackles and fourth in total stops, while placing 24th nationally with an average on 10.4 tackles per game. He tied for the conference lead with three recovered fumbles, while making double-digit tackles in eight games this season, including a season-high of 17 against Western Illinois. Sewall finished his career with 358 career tackles, good for sixth in Indiana State history.
As a junior, Sewall was named to the First Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference squad as well as the First Team All-MVFC Academic Team and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. During his sophomore campaign, Sewall was an All-MVFC All-Academic Honorable Mention selection after finishing third on the team with 84 total tackles. Sewall was an Honorable Mention All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection as well as an honoree on the All-MVFC Newcomer Squad in 2008 as a freshman.
Sewall, a native of Western Springs, Ill., played high school football at Lyons Township where he earned All-Conference West Suburban Silver plaudits and was named the Defensive Player of the Year in the West Suburban Silver Conference as a senior.
