Eligibility
The NCAA requires all incoming freshmen to have their academic eligibility and amateur status certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center (formerly the NCAA Clearinghouse) prior to practicing, competing or receiving athletically-related financial aid at an NCAA institution. For more information, please refer to the Initial Eligibility Quick Reference Sheet.Â
Junior college transfers do not necessarily have to have their academic status as a "qualifier" certified; however they MUST have their amateur status certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Once a person becomes a student athlete at Indiana State University, they are bound by institutional, Missouri Valley Conference, and NCAA eligibility and amateurism rules throughout the remainder of his or her collegiate career.Â
Admissions
In addition to meeting NCAA and the Missouri Valley Conference eligibility requirements, an incoming student-athlete must be admitted to Indiana State University as a full-time degree-seeking student.

NCAA Eligibility Report
To better assist coaches in ensuring initial eligibility of incoming student-athletes and to ease the initial eligibility certification process at the beginning of the academic year, coaches should strongly encourage recruits to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center during their junior year in high school at the latest. Further, coaches should ensure that recruits send their final official transcripts from all high schools attended, with proof of graduation and standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), to the NCAA Eligibility Center.
NCAA Eligibility Center
During the recruiting process, when a coach feels that a recruit has serious potential to be a student-athlete at ISU and before any official visit, coach should submit the "IRL Activation Form" in order for recruits to be added to Indiana State's Institutional Request List ("IRL") with the Eligibility Center. When a recruit is no longer being recruited, the coach should request that Compliance "deactivate" that recruit from the IRL as soon as possible. The coach must follow up with student-athletes to ensure that all NCAA Eligibility Center-required materials have been submitted.
Coaches are NOT permitted to call the Eligibility Center directly. All communication with the NCAA Eligibility Center concerning recruits may only be made authorized Compliance staff members.

Permission to Contact
Before any coach or staff member may communicate with a person who is enrolled at or has attended another four year institution, the Compliance Office must have on file written permission or a formal release from the athletic director of the student athlete's current/former institution. Requests to obtain a release or permission to contact should be forwarded to the Compliance Office. This rule applies even if the person never participated in athletics at the prior institution.
An Indiana State student athlete wishing to transfer to another four year institution must be granted a release from the atletic director before the student-athlete may speak with coches/staff at another four-year institution. Indiana State University student-athletes interested in transferring must complete the Student Athlete Transfer Release Request Form and obtain thir Head Coach's signature in order to initiate the process to obtain a release. Any student-athlete who is denied a release by their coach, for any reason, is entitled to appeal the denial. For more information on the appeal process, please refer to the Student Athlete Handbook or contact the sport supervisor or the Compliance Office.
International Student-Athlete Eligibility
There are a variety of NCAA and ISU compliance forms that international student-athletes must complete prior to their initial participation in athletics at Indiana State University.
Indiana State University's International Admissions Office should be worked with very closely to ensure that all admission requirements are met. Note: The NCAA and the Eligibility Center have very complicated rules regarding academic eligibility and amateurism. Coaches must work closely with the Compliance Office to ensure compliance with those rules. The sooner the coach and the recruit start this process, the better.
The Indiana State University International Admission Office will NOT issue an I-20 to any recruit or ISU coach until their office receives confirmation from the Compliance Office that the NCAA Eligibility Center has certified the prospect as a "Qualifier" and their amateur status has been certified.
