ISU Athletics-Olympic Tradition
Olympic Tradition
Five ISU athletes have competed in a total of 10 Olympic games. Here’s a look back at the participants, when they graduated, their degree(s), the year and sport in which they participated, and an update on what they are doing now.
BRUCE BAUMGARTNER
Graduated: 1982 with a degree in industrial arts education. Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992 & 1996, in wrestling. Now: athletic director, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in Edinboro, PA.
LARRY BIRD
Graduated: 1979 with a degree in physical education. Olympics: 1992 in basketball. Now: retired NBA player and coach, Naples, FL.
BENITA EDDS
Graduated: 1981 with a degree in biology. Olympics: 1984 in archery. Now: owner, Timber Knoll Embroidery in Statesville, N.C. (most recent information available).
BYRAN LETURGEZ
Graduated: 1991 with a degree in business management. Olympics: 1992, 1994 & 1998 in bobsledding. Now: investment management consultant, IJL Wachovia in Atlanta, GA.
KURT THOMAS
Graduated: 1980 with a degree in education. Olympics: 1976 in gymnastics. Now: owner, Kurt Thomas School of Gymnastics in Plano, TX.
