Men's basketball signs EIU transfer Meechie White

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State men's basketball head coach Matthew Graves announced the signing of Demetris "Meechie" White.

Meechie White, a 6-1 junior guard originally from Louisville, Ky., spent his junior season at Eastern Illinois where he averaged 10.5 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, and 3.1 assists per game as the only Panther to start each game.

"We are excited to welcome Meechie and his family to Indiana State and the Wabash Valley," said head coach Matthew Graves. "Meechie will be able to help us impact winning on so many levels. He has such a great and supportive family. During his career he has also been able to play for some of top coaches in Tim Haworth at Louisville Male, Brian Bess and Robert Kirby at Three Rivers, and Marty Simmons at Eastern Illinois University. His energy, toughness and leadership have been cornerstones to the teams he has played on. We look forward to him getting to campus and being able to get to work."

White's 3.1 assists per game ranked him ninth in the OVC while his 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio landed him eighth at the end of the season. He's coming off a season where he shot 43.3% (116-268) from the field, 38.0% (35-92) from downtown, and 85.7% (78-91) from the line. White averaged 2.03 steals per game, which is tied for 31st in Division I in steals per game.

Prior to EIU, White played two seasons of junior college at Three Rivers Community College, helping lead the team to its first NJCAA National Tournament appearance in more than 10 years. He averaged 11.0 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 2.7 assists per game between his two seasons. In his sophomore season, he scored 13.0 points per game on a 36.9% clip from three, grabbing 4.5 rebounds per game and 3.6 assists per game.

White says his top skills he's bringing to Indiana State are his IQ, leadership, and toughness. "I am an extrovert and I look forward to being out in the community and getting to know everyone in town," said White. "The support I saw when I was on campus was great, you can tell how much basketball matters at Indiana State."

When asked what interested him in Indiana State Basketball, he said, "The brand of basketball that Indiana State plays, and I know there is tremendous support from the fan base. Also, the relationships that I was able to form with the coaching staff and see their vision for working towards a championship level this season."

In his sophomore season, he earned All-Region 16 honors and first team All-Missouri Community College Athletic Conference honors. In his freshman season, he was a second team All-Region and second team All-MCCAC selection.

Coming into Indiana State, he has amassed 1,130 points, 366 rebounds, 238 assists, 134 steals, and 44 blocks.
