Western Kentucky claims game one of the weekend series with extra-inning walk-off single

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Parker Coley connected on the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Western Kentucky topped visiting Indiana State in a back-and-forth affair on Friday night at Nick Denes Field, 6-5.

Western Kentucky (8-7) went up 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning as Lane Arroyos powered a two-run home run over the right field wall to give the Hilltoppers their first lead of the game. Two batters later, Reid Howard connected on an RBI triple down the right field line scoring Manny Alberto to give WKU the two-run lead heading into the ninth.

The Sycamores (6-7) rallied back against Western Kentucky relievers Jude Favela and Zach Lyles sparked by Caleb Niehaus' one-out double to the right center gap. Mason Roell pinch-hit and was hit by a pitch, while Andrew Ortiz beat out an infield single to load the bases, before Emil Estrella drew an RBI walk to cut the deficit down to 5-4. Carter Beck followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field with Roell sliding into home ahead of the tag to make it a 5-5 contest.

Breyllin Suriel (0-2) struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth and Andrew Ortiz caught the final out of the inning to send the game into extras.

The Sycamores were unable to put anyone on the base paths in the top of the 10th inning against WKU reliver Nathan Lawson (1-0). The Hilltoppers rallied in the bottom of the inning with Hayden Robbins drawing a walk and stealing second. After Logan Luckett reached base on a walk, Coley connected on the game-winning RBI single to right center scoring Robbins to close out the contest.

Indiana State went ahead early on Caden Miller's first-inning RBI single, while Emil Estrella connected on a two-run triple down the left field line to put the Sycamores ahead. WKU countered with Camden Ross' RBI single and Coley scoring on a double play ball to make it a 3-2 game, before the late-inning rallies.

Carter Beck and Caleb Niehaus both had two hit games for the Sycamores, while Emil Estrella reached base three times on the night with his triple and a pair of walks to go with three RBIs. Niehaus and Nomar Garcia both doubled in the loss.

Suriel took the loss on the mound after going 1.2 innings allowing one hit and one run while walking three and striking out three. Jack Armstrong went 4.0 innings in the start, while Colby Morse was effective in relief going 3.0 innings allowing just two hits and a run while striking out two.

Lane Arroyos and Parker Coley combined for four of WKU's nine hits in the win, with the duo adding both of the Hilltoppers' extra-base hits in the game.

Nathan Lawson went 1.0 innings in recording his first win of the season. Gavin Perry worked 4.0 innings allowing six hits and three runs in the start, while Mick Uebelhor went 3.1 shutout innings in relief with five strikeouts.
