PONCE, Puerto Rico – No. 17 North Carolina State took advantage of a five-run second inning sparked by Dalton Bargo's solo home run and the Sycamores were unable to piece together a rally late in falling to the Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon inside Estadio Paquito Montaner, 10-4.
The Sycamores (1-1) rally started in the sixth inning after North Carolina State (2-0) took a 10-0 lead after five innings in Ponce.
Carter Beck singled and
Emil Estrella doubled to open the sixth inning and
Caden Miller and
Nick Sutherlin followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to put Indiana State's first runs on the board.
Indiana State rallied again in the ninth inning as
Jorge Cartagena launched a one-out two-run home run over the left field wall scoring Sutherlin, but the Sycamores were unable to stretch together the offense late in the game in suffering their first loss of the season.
N.C. State took the early 5-0 lead in the second inning as the Wolfpack took advantage of Sycamore starting pitcher
Breyllin Suriel's (0-1) wildness on the mound as the Indiana State right-hander went 1.1 innings allowing three hits and five runs while walking four and striking out two.
Spencer Johnsen worked 2.2 innings in relief in his Indiana State debut, scattering six hits and four runs, while
Colby Morse,
Hunter Small, and
Aaron Moss worked a combined 4.0 innings of scoreless relief late.
Estrella and Cartagena combined to have four of Indiana State's six hits in Saturday's game with Estrella connecting on the Sycamores' first double of 2026, while Cartagena's two-run home run marked his first of the 2026 campaign.
Andrew Ortiz and
Carter Beck also singled in the loss.
Brayden Fraasman went 3-for-5 from the plate with a double to lead a 12-hit N.C. State offensive attack on the day. Bargo's solo home run was one of his two hits, while eight of the nine players in the Wolfpack lineup recorded hits overall on the day.
Jacob Duden (1-0) picked up the win after going 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two. Sam Harris, Aiden Kitchings, and Truitt Manuel went the final 3.0 frames combining to allow four this and four runs while striking out five.

- The Wolfpack were at it again in the third inning as Andrew Wiggins doubled home Brayden Fraasman, while Lanphere added an RBI single scoring Wiggins to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
- N.C. State went up 9-0 in the fourth inning as McHugh scored on a wild pitch and Fraasman connected on an RBI double down the left field line scoring Nixon.
- The lead hit 10-0 in the fifth as McHugh's fielder's choice allowed Wyatt Peifer to score.
- Indiana State put two on the board in the top of the sixth inning as Caden Miller and Nick Sutherlin connected on back-to-back sacrifice flies scoring Carter Beck and Emil Estella to cut the deficit to 10-2.
- Jorge Cartagena provided the final runs of the contest with a two-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the ninth inning, scoring Sutherlin on the play, to provide the final 10-4 margin.

Season tickets for the 2026 Indiana State baseball season are now on sale as the Sycamores head into their second season under Head Coach
Tracy Archuleta. The Sycamores will play 21 home games inside Bob Warn Field this season, starting on March 4 against Lindenwood.
Reserved chairback season tickets can be purchased for $110. General admission season tickets will go on sale as well with adult ($75), seniors ($55), and youth ($40) tickets also being available for purchase. There will be a $5 surcharge added to those wanting tickets printed.
The Sycamores have teamed up with Pacesetter Sports and the Spirit Shop for the third consecutive season for a season ticket deal. Fans will receive a $50 Pacesetter gift card for each $110 reserved chairback season ticket, $35 gift card for each $75 general admission season ticket, $25 gift card for each $55 senior general admission ticket, and $20 gift card for each $40 youth season ticket sold.
