TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State Athletics will welcome back and recognize the NCAA Tournament men's basketball teams from 1999-2000 and 2000-01 as a part of the January 24 game day festivities inside Hulman Center.
In addition to the Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame recognition throughout the January 24 men's basketball game against Drake, the Sycamores will also be recognizing the two men's basketball teams during a brief halftime ceremony as Indiana State honors the two teams in their team reunions.
The 1999-00 team won the MVC regular season title, boasting a 22-10 overall record and a 14-4 MVC record. The Sycamores closed out the regular season with two wins over Evansville and Bradley to secure the league title. The Sycamores went on to earn an at-large bid into the 2000 NCAA Tournament as a No. 12 seed, before falling to No. 5 Texas in the First Round.
The 2000-01 team finishing the overall season 22-12 and 10-8 in conference play before advancing on to the conference tournament. After beating Bradley in the MVC Tournament Championship Game 69-63, the Sycamores earned the Valley's auto-bid to the NCAA Tournament, making their second consecutive appearance in the postseason and second MVC Tournament title in program history.
The No. 13 seed Sycamores went on to win the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, beating No. 4 seed Oklahoma in overtime, 70-68. It marked the Sycamores first NCAA Tournament win since the 1979 NCAA Tournament when Indiana State made it all the way to the championship game. Indiana State fell to Gonzaga in the Second Round to end their postseason run.
Team members Nate Green, Michael Menser, and Matt Renn were each inducted into the Indiana State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012, while coach Royce Waltman was inducted into the 2022 class.
Members of the team will be in attendance for the game, and former Sycamore Nate Green will be the guest for the Sycamore Signal.
