Sycamores fall to No. 19/22 Indiana in Friday night showdown

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 19/22 Indiana seized control of Friday night's game early utilizing a strong offense and stifling defensive effort to top visiting Indiana State, 73-0, inside Memorial Stadium.
 
The Sycamores (2-1) were unable to gather momentum throughout the contest as Indiana State was limited to 77 yards of total offense (39 rushing, 38 passing) in the eighth matchup all-time against the Hoosiers. Indiana (3-0) was able to control the tempo of the game with 680 yards of total offense and 33 first downs and led the time of possession battled 33:37-26:23 in securing the nonconference win.
 
Indiana State was unable to gain traction in the first half in front of an announced crowd of 46,219 inside Memorial Stadium and the Hoosiers rode the crowd's momentum with touchdown drives in six of their seven possessions in the half. IU quarterback Fernando Mendoza had five touchdown passes, three to Omar Cooper Jr., and added a seven-yard touchdown run over the first half as the Hoosiers built a 45-0 lead at the break.
 
The Hoosiers added four more scores in the second half with Alberto Mendoza throwing two touchdown passes (one to Omar Cooper Jr.), while Khobie Martin had a pair of touchdown runs to cap the IU scoring in the matchup.
 
Brock Riddle led Indiana State's passing efforts in the game as the redshirt freshman completed 3-of-4 attempts for a team-high 25 yards. Keegan Patterson was 8-of-16 for 13 yards, while getting sacked four times by the IU pass rush.
 
Angelo St. Louis was the Sycamores' leading rusher with 22 yards on five carries, while Plez Lawrence (six carries, 11 yards) and Deion Brown (eight carries, 10 yards) both reached double-digits on the ground. Keshon Singleton was Indiana State's leading receiver with one catch for 17 yards, while Zack Drawdy Jr. hauled in three catches for 12 yards.
 
Defensively, Kimal Clark and Braxton Sampson paced the Sycamores with seven tackles apiece on Friday night. J.T. Anderson added six stops and a pass breakup, while Alex Rose recorded six tackles, 1.0 tackles-for-loss, and one forced fumble in his first start of the 2025 season.
 
Fernando Mendoza paced the IU offense going 19-of-20 for 270 yards and five touchdowns in the first half. His favorite target, Cooper Jr., finished with 10 catches for 207 yards and four touchdowns in the win, while Martin led the IU rushing attack with 11 carries for 109 yards and two scores.
 
Isaiah Jones led the IU defensive efforts with four tackles, 2.5 TFL, and 1.0 sacks. Overall, the Indiana defense recorded 16.0 tackles-for-loss and five sacks on the evening.
