NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana State fell to Belmont, 4-0, late Saturday night. Following a series of delays, a single game was played Saturday night with a first pitch at 8 p.m. ET.
Kenzie Cornwell snapped the strikeout streak with a single to left center, after the first four Sycamores struck out to open the game. The nation's strikeout leader from Belmont went on to record the first six outs. Cornwell's single marked her fourth-straight game with at least one hit.
It was the Bruins that got on the board first, scoring on a based-loaded walk. Belmont ended the inning plating three, taking the 3-0 lead into the top of the fourth inning.
Hannah Welch singled just over the second baseman's head for the Sycamores' second hit of the game. She took second base three pitches into the next batter's at-bat but was left stranded. In the bottom of the inning, all three Sycamore outfielders got into the action catching a flyball, holding the Belmont's lead to 3-0 heading into the sixth inning.
The game took about a 50-minute hiatus for a lightning delay and picked back up about 10:35 p.m. ET.
Belmont added another run in their half of the sixth and held it for the eventual 4-0 victory.
Hailey Griffin (L, 10-8) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, with four strikeouts and one free pass. Cornwell and Welch recorded the only two hits in the game for Indiana State.
Belmont's Maya Johnson remained atop the nation in season strikeouts, ending the night with her new career-high 18.
Up Next: Indiana State and Belmont square off in a Sunday doubleheader, tomorrow May 4, with the first game's first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET and game two to follow.
