Late rally falls short as Sycamores drop Saturday afternoon contest to Bradley

MARION, ILL. – Indiana State nearly rallied all the way back following an hour-plus lightning delay at Mountain Dew Park as the Sycamores put the tying run at the plate, but Bradley was able to hold on to the 7-3 win on Saturday afternoon to secure the series win.

Trailing 7-0 after the bottom of the fifth inning, the Sycamores (21-25, 9-11) and Braves (11-31, 7-13) were forced to the clubhouses at Mountain Dew Park as lightning struck in the vicinity of the ballpark. The brief respite appeared to help refocus Indiana State as the Sycamores had been limited to just a trio of walks at the plate by Bradley starting pitcher Josh Vaughn (1-3) as the Braves' right-hander carried a no-hit bid through the fifth.

The Sycamores attacked reliever Brayden Marks when play resumed as Carlos Pena connected on Indiana State's first hit of the game with a one-out double down the left field line moving Carter Beck to third. Jeremy Martinez brought Beck home with an RBI ground out to cut the Bradley lead down to 7-1.

Brady Banker kept the Bradley offense in check retiring six Braves in a row, including his first five coming out of the lightning delay before surrendering a two-out single to Cole Luckey. Aaron Moss added a scoreless eighth inning in relief as the Sycamores' pitching staff allowed the offense to rally in the contest.

The Sycamores strung together hits in both the seventh and eighth innings, before cracking the scoreboard again in the top of the ninth against Marks. Jackson Taylor connected on a one-out triple to left field and came around to score on Mason Roell's RBI infield single. Eli Gipson followed with a base hit back up the middle forcing Bradley to go to the bullpen with Eli Lehrman taking the mound.

Beck continued to have the hot bat at the plate with an RBI single through the right side plating Roell and putting the potential tying run in the on-deck circle. Two batters later, Pena drew a walk bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Jeremy Martinez, but Lehrman was able to get the Sycamore catcher to ground out back up the middle to quell the rally and secure the series win for the Braves.

Bradley took the early 3-0 lead against Indiana State starting pitcher Max McEwen (6-3) in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by a Bobby Atkinson RBI ground-rule double and Cole Luckey's two-run single. The Braves stretched the lead on a pair of wild pitches with Jackson Smith and Ashton Horchem scoring, while Atkinson (RBI sacrifice fly) and Horchem (RBI single) gave Bradley the 7-0 lead after the fifth inning.

Beck and Eli Gipson finished with two hits apiece as Indiana State recorded all 10 of their hits in the game following the lightning delay. Pena doubled and Taylor Tripled to highlight the offense, while Beck reached base in all five plate appearances after drawing walks in his first three at-bats.

McEwen took the loss after going 2.2 innings allowing five hits and four runs while striking out two before leaving the game due to injury. Jacob Spencer entered and went 1.1 innings in relief allowing three hits and a pair of runs. Brady Banker went a season-long 3.0 innings allowing three hits and a run, while Aaron Moss worked a scoreless eighth inning on the mound.

Luckey had a team-high three hits to pace the Bradley offense that had 11 hits overall in the game.

Vaughn left the game after 5.0 innings on the mound allowing three walks while striking out three in claiming his first win of the 2025 season. Marks allowed nine hits and three runs over 3.1 innings of relief, while Lehrman went the final 0.2 innings to close out the contest.
