NORMAL, Ill. – Indiana State's 2025 baseball season came to an end on Tuesday night at Duffy Bass Field as the No. 8 Sycamores fell to the No. 5 Illinois State Redbirds, 14-4, in an elimination game at the Missouri Valley Baseball Championships.
On a day plagued by weather delays that pushed the original 2:30 p.m. ET start time back to an 8:30 p.m. ET start, the Sycamores (24-31) jumped on Redbirds' starting pitcher Tyrelle Chadwick (6-3) early as
Carlos Pena opened the game with a leadoff solo home run over the right field wall.
Weston Fulk followed three batters later with an RBI single scoring
Jorge Cartagena to put Indiana State ahead 2-0 early.
However, similar to the weekend series this past week in Terre Haute, the Illinois State (28-26) rallied back scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning against Indiana State starter
Ty Brooks (3-5) to seize control of the game.
Indiana State turned the ball over to All-MVC First Team reliever
Gavin Morris in the bottom of the second inning and the Sycamore senior delivered in his longest outing of the 2025 season. Morris worked 5.0 innings and 83 pitches as the Brazil, Ind. native matched Chadwick on the mound over the middle part of the game before fatigue set in late in the contest.
The Redbirds rallied late with nine runs over the seventh and eighth innings to secure their second consecutive run-rule win over Indiana State to claim the 14-4 win and advance to the start of Wednesday's double-elimination rounds.
Carter Beck went 3-for-3 to pace the Indiana State offense on the evening as the sophomore outfielder reached base in all four plate appearances. Cartagena and
Nomar Garcia both doubled, while Pena homered to highlight the Sycamores at the plate.
Brooks took the loss after allowing five hits and four runs over 1.2 innings of work on the mound. Morris went 5.0 innings allowing six hits and four runs while striking out four.
Jacob Spencer,
Breyllin Suriel, and
Jack Armstrong closed out the game on the mound.
All nine Illinois State players in the lineup hit safely on Tuesday night with Josh Outlaw and Kyle Gibson both posting three-hit games in the win. Daniel Pacella added two runs and three runs scored, while Daniel Contreras added three RBIs in the game.
Chadwick went the distance on the mound for Illinois State allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out seven in the complete game effort.
