Redbirds power past Sycamores in Thursday night series opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Illinois State's Daniel Pacella and Judah Morris both homered twice over the first four innings to offset a Carter Beck home run as Indiana State fell to the visiting Redbirds on Thursday night at Bob Warn Field, 11-4.

The Redbirds (26-25, 14-11) jumped on Indiana State (23-29, 11-14) starting pitcher Breyllin Suriel (0-6) early with Pacella and Morris home runs in the top of the first inning to give the Redbirds the early 3-0 lead. The Illinois State duo would both homer again and Luke Stulga added a two-run shot in the third inning to stake the visitors to an early 9-2 lead.

Indiana State had its chances to rally in the game, but a pair of double play balls limited the Sycamores' chances in falling in the series opener on Thursday evening.

Carlos Pena and Jorge Cartagena both had multi-hit games for Indiana State as the Sycamores connected on eight hits overall in the contest. Beck homered to power the offense, while John Curl added a late RBI in the loss.

Suriel went 4.0 innings in the start allowing seven hits and 10 runs while walking three and striking out two. Jacob Spencer shined in the long relief outing allowing seven hits and one run while striking out two over a career-best 5.0 innings of work.

Pacella finished 3-for-5 from the plate with four RBIs as Illinois State connected on 14 hits overall in the win. Noah Smith, Pacella, Brayden Bakes, and Daniel Contreras added doubles to highlight a Redbird offense that had nine extra-base hits in the game.

Tyrelle Chadwick (5-3) went 5.0 innings allowing six hits and two runs while striking out one in picking up the win. Michael Addari added 3.0 innings of one-run, one-hit relief, while MacCallan Conklin worked the final frame to close out the contest.
