TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State men's basketball head coach
Matthew Graves announced the signing of Sterling Young to the 2025-26 roster.
Young comes to Terre Haute from Florida A&M, previously at Charlotte then Pratt Community College. The incoming graduate transfer is a 6-1 native of Queens, N.Y.
Young is coming off a 17.0 PPG season at FAMU, earning him the SWAC Player of the Year award. He landed second in the conference in points per game, second in field goal percentage, second in free throw percentage, and fifth in threes per game (2.1).
In 28 games his senior year, he shot 43.9% from the field (151-344) and 34.9% from three (59-169), while hitting 81.4% (114-140) from the free throw line. His efforts earned him SWAC Player of the Week honors three times. He set a career high in scoring with 37 points last season in league play, making 7-of-10 from three. That was the start of a four-game stretch where he made 19-of-32 (59.4%) from deep.
"I chose Indiana State because of the love and relationship gained with the coaching staff," said Young. "Being able to put that jersey on … [I] know that there's a lot of support and energy that comes with it."
When asked what the main aspect that fans can get excited about, Young stated "I feel like I'm going to bring energy and effort every time, with probably a little New York style with it."
Throughout his four seasons of basketball, he scored 1,021 points in 86 total games. Young is a career 44.2% shooter from the field and 34.8% from three. From the free throw line, he has hit at an 80.9% clip (169-209).
"Sterling is a veteran guard who has seen success at multiple levels in his career," said Coach Graves. "He earned an incredible honor by being named the conference player of the year last season. His skill set allows him to not only score at all three levels, but to also facilitate to others at a high level. We have an extended knowledge of him having seen him going back to Miami Prep school and throughout his junior college career at Pratt Community College."
At Pratt CC, Young was named to the All-KJCCC Honorable Mention team, where he averaged 15.9 points per game shooting just under 39% from downtown.
