Offense connects, McEwen dominant as Sycamores down Murray State on Saturday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State offense took advantage of a Murray State error to score five runs in the third inning and Max McEwen was dominant once again as the Sycamores evened the weekend series with the Racers with the 11-1 run-rule shortened win on Saturday afternoon at Bob Warn Field.

Indiana State (21-21, 9-8) welcomed back and recognized their Sycamore baseball alumni in attendance prior to first pitch and honored the 1995 Missouri Valley Championship team pregame before settling in for the afternoon contest against Murray State (29-10, 11-6).

McEwen (6-2) and Murray State starter Isaac Silva (5-2) put on a pitching clinic over the first two innings before the Indiana State offense took control of the game. Carter Beck and Thomas Emerich connected on back-to-back one-out singles, while Carlos Pena drew a walk to load the bases against Silva. The Murray State right-hander was able to retire Jeremy Martinez, before Keegan Garis coaxed a two-out walk scoring Beck for the first run of the game.

Silva was able to get the next batter, Mason Roell, to hit a fly ball to left field in attempt to end the Indiana State rally. However, Racers left fielder Dan Tauken was unable to make the play as the ball bounced out of his glove allowing all three runs to score giving Indiana State the 4-0 lead. Jackson Taylor followed with an RBI single plating Roell to provide the early 5-0 advantage.

McEwen took over from there as the redshirt sophomore was efficient once again on the mound. The Sellersburg, Ind. native recorded 16 consecutive strikes to open the game and had five strikeouts through three innings. He retired 12 consecutive batters at one point running from Dom Decker's two-out single in the second through Jonathan Hogart's two-out single in the sixth inning, before leaving the game with a 6-0 lead after six innings.

The Sycamores offense continued to press in the seventh as Indiana State responded to Carson Garner's solo home run in the top of the frame with a four-run bottom of the inning highlighted by Beck's bases-clearing three-run double to right center to make it a 10-1 game.

Beck continued the Indiana State highlights on the day with a diving catch in center in the top of the eighth inning to quell a Murray State rally, before Taylor capped the scoring with a walk-off RBI single down the first base line bringing home Keegan Garis to end the contest.

Beck finished 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to pace the Indiana State offense, while Garis added a three-hit day as the Sycamores connected on 13 hits overall in the win. Jeremy Martinez and Taylor both added two hits apiece on the day.

McEwen went 6.0 innings on the mound allowing just two hits while striking out six in his fourth consecutive win on the mound. The redshirt sophomore needed just 71 pitches on the day before turning the ball over to Jack Armstrong in the seventh. Armstrong took it the rest of the way allowing the Garner home run before settling in to strike out two over the final 2.0 innings.

Decker and Hogart combined to have four of Murray State's five hits on the day for the Racers' offense.

Silva went 3.2 innings allowing eight hits and six runs (two earned) while striking out five in taking the loss. Jack Wajda, Jackson Ugo, Chase Clatur, Harper McLendon, and Preston Chaudoin all saw time on the mound in relief.
