CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Indiana State secured the early lead with a five-run second inning and
Max McEwen went into the seventh inning in his second collegiate start as the Sycamores took Friday's series opener at Southeast Missouri State, 7-1.
The Sycamores (6-7) seized control of the contest early as
Jackson Taylor sparked the scoring with a two-run double in the top of the second inning. Taylor's first extra-base hit as a Sycamore sparked the five-run inning capped by
Carlos Pena's two-run double to the wall in right center to provide McEwen (1-1) all the offense he would need in the contest.
McEwen carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the longest outing of his career, and utilized a number of key defensive plays from shortstop
Eli Gipson on the way to picking up his first win of the season. The redshirt sophomore right-hander went a career-long 6.1 innings allowing two hits and a run (unearned), while striking out five. He pitched around four walks and a hit-by-pitch in Indiana State's longest outing by a starting pitcher in 2025.
Indiana State added to the lead in the fourth inning as Taylor again sparked the rally with a leadoff triple, while
Jeremy Martinez connected on an RBI double to provide the final offense for the Sycamores in the win.
Pena went 3-for-5 from the plate with a double and pair of RBIs, while Taylor doubled and tripled, scoring twice and driving in two runs to highlight the offense.
Carter Beck added a pair of RBIs and a stolen base in the win.
Aaron Moss pitched the Sycamores out of a jam in the seventh inning, while
Zac Laird worked the final two innings of scoreless baseball to close out the contest. Laird went 2.0 innings, striking out three, including the final out of the contest to secure the win.
The SEMO offense mustered four singles in the loss with Jack Opoien driving in the Redhawks' lone run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Brian Strange (1-3) took the loss allowing eight hits and seven runs over 3.2 innings on the mound. Eddie White worked 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, while Ethan Osborne and Matthew Lorenzano worked the eighth and ninth frames.
