Indiana State hosts Pacific in final nonconference weekend

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball is back at The Bob this weekend as the Sycamores begin a three-game series against the University of the Pacific spanning March 14-16 at Bob Warn Field. First pitch in Friday's opener is set for 4 p.m., while Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (noon) will wrap up the series.

All three games will be carried live on 105.5 The Legend with live stats available at GoSycamores.com. There will not be an ESPN+ stream for the weekend series.

Indiana State (7-10) remains at home for one of their longest home stretches of the 2025 season. Following Tuesday's home contest against Indiana, the Sycamores have six of their next seven contests at home, including next weekend's Missouri Valley Conference opening series against Valparaiso (Mar. 21-23).

The homestand comes at the right time for the Sycamores as Indiana State spent the better part of the first month of the season on the road traveling to take on Wagner, Florida Gulf Coast, Northeastern, Bethune-Cookman, the LeClair Classic at East Carolina, and last weekend's series at Southeast Missouri State. Overall, the Sycamores traveled nearly 3,440 total miles over the opening month of the season prior to the beginning of the week.

Weekend promotions for the series include the first of five Indiana State baseball card giveaways on Friday, Vigo County Educators Day (all Vigo County Educators receive two free general admission tickets with ID) on Saturday, and kids running the bases before a team autograph session on Sunday.

The Sycamores head into the weekend looking to bounce back from Tuesday night's loss to visiting Indiana. The Hoosiers took advantage of a pair of Indiana State errors in the top of the sixth inning to plate five runs to open up the contest in the Sycamores' 9-4 loss.

Breyllin Suriel was sharp over his second start of the 2025 season as the senior right-hander went a career-best 5.1 innings on the mound. He allowed four hits and three runs while striking out four. Suriel retired 14 batters in a row at one point from the first through the start of the sixth inning to keep the Sycamores in the contest.

Andrew Ortiz had a breakout game at the plate as the freshman connected on his first two collegiate hits. The outfielder connected on an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the second inning, and then hit a leadoff triple off the wall in right center in the bottom of the eighth for his first multi-hit game. Carter Beck homered for the third time in 2025, while Carlos Pena recorded his sixth multi-hit effort in the last seven games to highlight the Sycamores' offense in the game.

Pena continues to lead the Sycamores' batting efforts in the 2025 season as the Bayside, N.Y. native saw his batting average rise to .367 following Tuesday's contest. Pena is tied for the team lead with six doubles and three home runs, while driving in 17 RBIs after settling in as the team's designated hitter over the last week.

Keegan Garis is hitting .298 from the plate with seven extra-base hits and a team-high 16 runs scored. The senior outfielder also leads the team with seven hit-by-pitches. Beck is hitting .292 over 17 starts with 19 hits, four doubles, and 16 RBIs while operating out of the leadoff position in the lineup. Additional Sycamores of note include Thomas Emerich tying for the team lead with six doubles, while three different Indiana State players have posted at least three stolen bases.

The Indiana State pitching staff has combined to post a 5.76 team ERA over the first 17 games of the year with an opponent batting average of .272. Max McEwen (2-1, 3.50 ERA) shined in his latest outing, going 6.1 innings allowing just two hits and an unearned run, while striking out five this past Friday against SEMO. Colby Morse (2-0, 1.17 ERA) looks to draw his first start of the season after a 7.1-inning shutout relief appearance last weekend, while Ty Brooks (1-2, 7.71) looks to bounce back after a rocky start against the Redhawks.

The Sycamores' have utilized multiple arms out of the bullpen this year led by Zac Laird's (0-0, 4.05) seven appearances, while Brady Banker (1.93 ERA), Aaron Moss (3.72 ERA), and Jack Armstrong (4.76 ERA) have also had strong showings recently.

Scouting Pacific
Pacific enters the weekend contest with a 9-9 overall record in the 2025 season following Wednesday morning's 11-10 win over CSU Bakersfield. The Tigers took two early games from UC San Diego and swept the weekend four-game series against South Dakota State, while adding victories over Seattle and Sacramento State to their tally on the year.

The Tigers were selected ninth overall in the West Coast Conference preseason poll after posting an 11-44 overall record and 5-19 mark in conference play last season. Pacific did not place anyone on the preseason All-Conference team as they compete in Head Coach Reed Peters' first season at the helm of the program.

Jake Tandy (.352) and JT Waldon (.311) are the top Pacific hitters heading into the weekend with the duo lining up in 17 of the 18 games played on the season. The duo are tied for the team lead with 19 hits apiece, while Tandy is second with 10 runs scored. Waldon provides the early power with a trio of doubles and two home runs, while leading the team with 13 RBIs. Overall, Pacific is hitting .234 from the plate with 27 stolen bases in 32 chances.

The Pacific pitching staff has posted a 5.10 team ERA over 155.1 innings in the early action. The Tigers have combined for a 137:78 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a .273 opponent batting average on the year. Regan Carter (0-1, 9.39 ERA) and Adan Perez (3-0, 0.82 ERA) are two arms expected to draw starts over the weekend leading 19 different pitchers who have seen time on the mound this season.

Series History

Against the West Coast Conference
Indiana State has lined up against four current members of the West Coast Conference over the Sycamores' program history.
