Fort Myers, FL – The Indiana State Sycamores opened their 2025 season on Friday at the FGCU Softball Complex with a pair of tough losses, falling 5-2 to LIU and 3-2 to host FGCU.
Game 1: LIU 5, Indiana State 2
The Indiana State Sycamores opened the 2025 season with a 5-2 loss to LIU on Friday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.
The Sycamores got their season started with Kenzie Cornwell reaching base with a single to the pitcher, marking the team's first hit of the season. On the defensive side, Cassi Newbanks struck out the first batter she faced and worked through the inning with two runners left on base.
Indiana State struck first in the second inning as Hannah Welch reached on an error, followed by a Livi Colip single. With one out, Morgan Goodrich reached on a fielder's choice, but Welch was thrown out at third. Jordan Thatcher then reached on a throwing error, allowing Goodrich to advance to third while Brailey Mills (pinch-running for Colip) scored an unearned run for the early 1-0 lead.
LIU answered in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on a combination of errors and timely hits, including a Lily Hinkle triple that put them up 5-1. Lauren Sackett took over in the circle, finishing the inning with the score remaining 5-1.
The Sycamores couldn't make a dent in the score in the fifth, despite Lauren Marsicek coming through with a single. LIU's defense held strong to keep the lead intact.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Sycamores tried to mount a comeback. Hannah Welch hit a double to right center but was left stranded on base as LIU's defense clamped down and ended the inning without any additional runs.

Kenzie Cornwell followed with an RBI single to right field, driving in Marx (pinch-running for Wischmeier) to cut the lead to 5-2. However, the Sycamores' rally fell short, as the game ended with a score of 5-2.
