Sycamores Fall to UT Martin and No. 7 Tennessee in Opening Day Action at UT Tournament

Knoxville, TN –Indiana State suffered a pair of losses on opening day at the University of Tennessee Tournament, falling 4-1 to UT Martin and 8-0 to Tennessee.

Game 1: UT Martin 4, Indiana State 1
Indiana State opened their tournament at the University of Tennessee on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to UT Martin.

Lauren Sackett set the tone early, retiring all three batters she faced in the first inning with strikeouts, starting her performance strong.

Sackett continued her dominance in the second inning, recording two more strikeouts. However, UT Martin managed to load the bases. The Sycamores defense stepped up, holding them off and keeping the game scoreless.

UT Martin broke the scoreless game in the fourth inning with a solo homer by Makarewicz to right-center, giving them a 1-0 lead. 

The Sycamores responded in the bottom half of the inning. Esposito and Welch singled to get on base. Esposito advanced to second on a ground out by Widmar, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Colip, tying the game at 1-1.

The Sycamores had a great opportunity to take the lead in the sixth inning.

After Esposito popped up, Widmar singled, and Marx pinch ran. Welch reached on a fielder's choice, and Colip singled to advance Welch. Mills followed with another single, loading the bases, but Wischmeier flew out to end the inning with the score still tied at 1-1.

UT Martin took control in the seventh inning, with Robinson hitting a 3-run homer to left, giving them a 4-1 lead.

Indiana State's hits came from Madison Poulson, Morgan Goodrich, Sophie Esposito, Abby Widmar, Hannah Welch (2), Livi Colip, Brailey Mills, and Lauren Marsicek.

Lauren Sackett (0-5) took the loss for the Sycamores, allowing seven hits and four runs, with two walks and 11 strikeouts, tying her career best in a single game.

Game 2: Tennessee 8, Indiana State 0
The Sycamores were defeated by the No.7 ranked Tennessee Volunteers with a final score of 8-0 on Friday evening. 

Tennessee took an early lead with an RBI double from M. Gibson, followed by two more runs in the second inning, including an RBI double from E. Dodge. 

A groundout in the third and an RBI single in the fourth extended the Volunteers' lead to 5-0. 

Tennessee capped the scoring with three more runs in the sixth, taking the 8-0 victory.

Kenzie Cornwell led the offense with a double, while Sophie Esposito and Brailey Mills each added a hit.

Megan Asher (0-1) took the loss, pitching 3.0 innings with six hits, four runs, and two strikeouts. Cassi Newbanks pitched 2.1 innings, allowing five hits and four runs. 

Up Next: The Sycamores will face Delaware State tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. A win would secure them the No. 3 seed, setting up a matchup with No. 2 seed UT Martin at 5:30 PM. If they fall to Delaware State, they will become the No. 4 seed and play the No. 1 seed Tennessee at 3:00 PM.
