GASTONIA, N.C. – Indiana State's bats exploded with a 20-run third inning as the Sycamores secured the series with a 36-6 win over Wagner on Sunday afternoon at CaroMont Health Park.
The Sycamores (2-1) held a 5-0 lead through the first two innings courtesy of
Nick Sutherlin and
Carlos Pena two-run home runs and a
Thomas Emerich RBI double, before taking control of the game with one out in the third. The Sycamores had 21 consecutive batters reach base with all nine Indiana State players in the lineup either recording a hit, scoring a run, or driving in a run during the inning.
The 20-run frame marked the most runs scored in the third inning by an NCAA Division I team according to the NCAA Baseball Record book, breaking the previous mark of 19 runs set by Clemson back on March 21, 1998, in the third inning against Maryland.
Jorge Cartagena started the third-inning rally with a double to left field, before
Keegan Garis drew a walk.
Eli Gipson brought home the Sycamores' first run of the inning with an RBI single scoring Cartagena to open the onslaught of runs.
Jeremy Martinez (RBI double), Emerich (two-run single),
Carter Beck (RBI single), Sutherlin (RBI walk), Cartagena (RBI walk), Garis (two-run double), Gipson (two-run single), Beck (two-run single),
Weston Fulk (RBI single), Cartagena (RBI walk), and Garis (two-run double) provided the runs over the inning as Indiana State built an early 25-0 lead through three innings.
The Sycamores added 10 more runs in the fifth inning. Sixteen batters went to the plate over the inning with Cartagena and Martinez connecting on three-run home runs to give Indiana State a 35-1 lead.
Alex Nevils added an RBI single in the sixth to put the cap on the Sycamores' 36 runs in the contest.
Freshman right-hander
Ty Brooks (1-0) was the beneficiary of the Indiana State offense. The Milford, Ind. native carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning on his way to allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four in his first collegiate win.
Garis and Martinez both recorded a team-high four hits as Indiana State tied a school record with 29 hits in Sunday's contest. Cartagena and Martinez both drove in five RBIs apiece, while Sutherlin and Garis both scored five runs each in the win.
Garis (two), Martinez (two), Pena, Sutherlin, Cartagena, and Emerich all doubled, while Pena, Sutherlin, Cartagena, and Martinez added home runs as the Sycamores connected on 12 extra-base hits in the series finale.
Aaron Moss,
Cole Chace,
Colby Morse, and
Cole Pacheco combined to go the final 4.0 innings on the mound to close out the Sycamores' win. Chace recorded his first collegiate strikeout over a scoreless seventh-inning, while Morse and Pacheco made their Indiana State debuts on the mound.
Colin Trizuto (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Wagner (1-2) after going 2.0 innings allowing four hits and five runs (three earned). Overall, 10 different Seahawks pitchers saw time on the mound on Sunday afternoon.
Bryce Phelps led Wagner's offense with three of the Seahawks' 12 hits in the loss. Diego Taverez and Phelps both doubled, while Jeffrey Delamota drove in two RBIs.
How They Scored
- Nick Sutherlin connected on a two-run home run to right field in the top of the first inning scoring Weston Fulk to stake Indiana State to the early 2-0 lead.
- Thomas Emerich recorded an RBI double bringing home Jeremy Martinez, before Carlos Pena launched a two-run home run down the right field line making it 5-0 Sycamores after two innings.
- The Sycamores sent 25 batters to the plate in the third inning scoring 20 runs on 11 hits on their way to taking a 25-0 lead. Indiana State had 21 consecutive batters reach base with all nine hitters in the lineup scoring over the frame.
- Bryce Phelps doubled home Diego Taverez to put the Seahawks on the scoreboard in the fourth to cut the Indiana State lead down to 25-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Sycamores responded with 10 more runs in the top of the fifth as 16 Indiana State players headed to the plate over the inning. Jorge Cartagena and Jeremy Martinez connected on three-run home runs in the inning, while Carlos Pena (two-run double), Weston Fulk, and Nick Sutherlin also drove in runs as Indiana State went up 35-1.
- Taverez added Wagner's second run in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI ground-rule double to right field scoring Lukas Torres to make it a 35-2 ballgame.
- Alex Nevils plated Indiana State's final run of the game with an RBI single through the left side scoring Sutherlin in the top of the sixth inning to make it 36-2.
- Jeffrey Delamota brought home Phelps for Wagner in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI fielder's choice to put the score at 36-3.
- Delamota singled home Phelps in the bottom of the eighth and Connor Roche scored on a double-play ball in the inning to make it a 36-5 contest.
- Andrew Marquis provided the final score with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth scoring Nicholas Mazzotta to put the game at 36-6.
